Ignaz Holzbauer
Ignaz Jacob Holzbauer (baptized September 18, 1711 in Vienna ; † April 7, 1783 in Mannheim ) was an Austrian composer .
Life
At the beginning of his career, Holzbauer was briefly employed by Count Thurn and Valsassina in Laibach . After a stopover in Venice, Count Franz Anton Rottal von Holešov appointed him Kapellmeister in Moravia . His first opera Lucio Papirio was performed there in 1737 . On April 30, 1737, he married the opera singer Rosalie Andreides († 1785) from Olomouc at his place of employment .
According to his own autobiography, he went to Vienna with his wife in 1738 and then to Italy for three years, where she a. a. Visited Milan and Venice. Between 1746 and 1750 he worked at the Burgtheater in Vienna, for which he composed ballet music. In 1751 he went to Stuttgart as court conductor . After the success of his opera Il figlio delle selve in Schwetzingen, the summer residence of Elector Karl Theodor , he was appointed "Kapellmeister for the theater" in Mannheim in 1753 . Many of his operas were performed there and in Schwetzingen over the next few years. During this time he made several trips abroad for productions of his operas, for example to Rome in 1756, Turin and Paris in 1758 and Milan in 1759. In the following decade there were several performances of his works in Vienna. In 1773 he was appointed director of the court orchestra in Mannheim. His focus of work was no longer opera, but sacred music, although he created three other works for the stage. He turned down a call to the Elector's Court in Munich. He completed his last opera Tancredi shortly before his death, while he was already suffering from deafness and other ailments.
Works
overview
As a composer, Holzbauer was extremely productive. There is evidence of more than 200 symphonies for orchestra , 21 of which were printed in Paris and a few others in Leipzig . In addition, he composed 18 string quartets , 13 concerts for various instruments, several oratorios (including La passione di Gesù Cristo signor nostro , Isacco figura del redentore and La Betulia liberata ), 26 masses (including a German one), 37 cantatas and other pieces of church music . He also wrote 15 Italian “Dramme per musica” (operas).
He caused a special stir with his German opera Günther von Schwarzburg about the counter-king Günther XXI. from Schwarzburg . Eleven months after the world premiere on January 5, 1777 in Mannheim, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote :
“Holzbauer's music is very nice. [...] What amazes me most is that a man as old as Holzbauer still has so much spirit; because you can't believe what's fiery in music. "
