Gerhard Present (born June 21, 1957 in Graz ) is an Austrian composer and conductor .

Life

After graduating from high school, from 1976, Gerhard Present studied composition with Iván Eröd and conducting with Milan Horvat at the Graz University of Music (now University of Music and Performing Arts Graz ) and received diplomas in these subjects with distinction in 1982 and 1985, respectively . In 1985 he received a teaching position at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. There he led a composers workshop until 1999 in which he rehearsed 48 concert programs. From 1986 to 1992 he was assistant at the chair for music theory with Iván Eröd as well as in the conducting class of Milan Horvat and with the university orchestra. In 1992 he became professor for music theory , form theory and music analysis, conducting, ensemble for new music , string chamber music and the like. a. appointed to this university.

Present shows long-term conducting activities, especially of contemporary music and own works. He is the founder and since 1988 artistic director of the ALEA ensemble . He has been Vice President since 2003 and President of the “Styrian Tonkünstlerbund” since 2005.

Gerhard Present is married to the violinist Sigrid Present-König.

Prizes and awards

  • 1996: Franz Joseph Reindl Prize for “La Tâche”, the City of Vienna's Music Promotion Prize
  • 1997: Theodor Körner Prize for "Sonata del Gesù"
  • 2010: Finalist of the "International Music Prize for Excellence in Composition"
  • 2011: Honorary Associate of the "National Academy of Music" (Colorado)

Performances

Present's works have so far seen around 900 performances in over 20 countries, including at the IGNM World Music Festival in Graz in 1982 at the Styrian Autumn Festival and in 2002 in Hong Kong , at the Musikforum Munich, at the “Nuovi Spazi musicali” festival in Rome and at the “ Witold Lutosławski” Festival "In Lublin / Poland, in the" Austrian Cultural Forum "and in Carnegie Hall (Recital Hall) in New York, in the Graham Gallery in Washington DC and in the Altavista Tower / Arlington / USA; in the " Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien " and in the Wiener Konzerthaus at the festivals "Österreich heute" and "Hörzüge", in the "Carinthisches Sommer", at the "Aspects Salzburg", in the " Styriarte " Graz and in the concert series of the Art association “ Alte Schmiede Wien”, “die other string” and “Steirischer Tonkünstlerbund” in Graz.

His works have been broadcast on Bavarian Radio, on radio stations in Poland, the Czech Republic, on "Hong Kong Radio 4 RTHK" and in Austria. He had composition commissions from the “Austro mechana”, from the “Society of Friends of Music in Vienna”, from the “Ensemble Kontrapunkte”, from the “ Austrian Cultural Forum ” New York, from the “International Liezen Cello Competition”, from the Creative Center Vienna, from Styrian Singers Association, Ambitus, MundART and the Vienna Art Trio.
