The entrance of the ministry

The Federal Ministry for Science and Research (short BMWF or Ministry of Science ) was an Austrian manager of the federation, and especially for the scientific research and academic education in charge.

The ministry was created in 1970 by Bruno Kreisky as a dedicated science and university ministry , making the concept of a culture ministry as the overall ministry for education and culture obsolete. 1996–2000 it was a combined science and transport ministry , 2000–2007 there was again a general education ministry with culture, then it was re-established in its original specialization.

On January 29, 2014, the National Council decided, with the votes of the governing parties, to close the Ministry of Science as part of a shift in competencies among the ministries. The ministry was dissolved when the new Federal Ministries Act came into force on March 1, 2014, and the agendas were transferred to the Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy .

With the Ministry of Innovation, the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology, there is still a second Ministry for Scientific Affairs in Austria, which is specifically responsible for applied and business-related research and development .

Originally conceived explicitly for science and research, the Ministry of Education added responsibility for art in 1994 (reform of the monument system ), in 1996 also for transport (time of the privatization of the public economy , Scholten , Eine , Schmid as Minister of Science and Transport), and in 1997 art came to the Federal Chancellery , and 2000–2007 the education and science ministries were united (Zeit Gehrer , traffic to the infrastructure ministry ). Most recently, the ministry was again purely science-related and in particular accompanied the Bologna process , the Erasmus program on mobility in higher education, and the privatization of the higher education landscape ( universities of applied sciences , private universities ).
