Gabriele Possanner State Prize

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gabriele Possanner State Prize for Gender Studies is an Austrian State Prize named after Gabriele Possanner .

The Austrian State Prize has been awarded as a science prize for the promotion of gender research since 1997 every two years at the suggestion of an expert jury at the Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy . The state award is endowed with 10,000 euros. At the same time, two sponsorship prizes are awarded, each endowed with 6,000 euros. Since 2013, a prize for a life's work under the sign of gender research has also been awarded.

The State Prize and the Appreciation Prize honor excellent scientific achievements in the field of gender research in Austria, and the Promotion Prizes honor excellent, innovative scientific work that deals with current socio-political discussions. In terms of content, there must be a reference to Austria, as well as gender-sensitive issues and methods.

Women and men can be nominated for the Gabriele Possanner State Prize and the Gabriele Possanner Award, and women and men can also apply for the Gabriele Possanner Prize. In 2013, the jury included two men for the first time. The first male winner in 2013 was Samir Medani, who was awarded a Possanner Promotion Prize for his scientific work "Gay Diva Worship".

The prizes were established in 1997 in memory of Gabriele Possanner, who 100 years earlier, in 1897, was the first woman to be awarded an academic degree by a university in what is now the territory of the Republic of Austria. For this, Gabriele Possanner had to take all of the “difficult exams” that she had previously successfully passed at the University of Zurich to obtain a doctorate at the University of Vienna. Gabriele Possanner was considered a pioneer and champion for equal professional opportunities for women.
