In 1986, she researched the phenomenon of nationalism and neo-fascism among the South Tyrolean social scientists and the Austrian study center for peace and conflict resolution Voters of the Italian language group in Bolzano. Pircher is considered to be one of the co-founders of Austrian women and gender studies in the 1980s and 1990s. Together with the social scientist Birgit Buchinger , who works in Salzburg, she described the mechanisms of the glass ceiling for women in 1992 and defined the term glass ceiling , which originated in the American scientific discourse, for the first time for the German-speaking area.

On behalf of the Austrian Ministry of Women , Erika Pircher worked at the Salzburg Institute for Everyday Culture together with the psychotherapist and disability activist Aiha Zemp in two research projects on the subject of sexual violence. In these empirical studies (1995, 1997), in which women and men with physical or mental disabilities living in Austrian facilities for the disabled were surveyed, the extent of sexual violence to which people with disabilities are exposed was scientifically proven for the first time worldwide.

In 1996 she founded the company GenderLink, a network for social research, with the educationalist Elfriede Ch. Neubauer, with a focus on the implementation of social science gender and diversity projects .

In the second half of the 1990s, as a project manager at EU level with Managing E-Quality (MEQ), a management training program to raise awareness of equality and the compatibility of work and private life for women and men, one of the first instruments of gender mainstreaming in Europe at the company level.

From 2002 to 2008 Erika Pircher worked as a lecturer for gender research at the Faculty for Educational Research of the Free University of Bolzano for the courses in social work and social pedagogy .
