The Austrian Study Center for Peace and Conflict Resolution (Austrian Study Center for Peace and Conflict Resolution, ASPR) is a private, non-profit research organization that specializes in the field of peace research and the promotion of peaceful conflict resolution.

history

The ASPR was founded in 1982 by the Burgenland Provincial Councilor Gerald Mader in Stadtschlaining , where it is based at Burg Schlaining .

Since 1983, the ASPR has organized an annual international summer academy which, through lectures, panel discussions and workshops, deals with a main topic of peace policy and aims to bring this closer to the public. In 1987, with the help of European UNESCO organizations, the ASPR founded the European University Center for Peace Studies (EPU), which until 2014 offered the Master’s program “Peace and Conflict Studies”.

Since 1992, the ASPR has been developing and implementing programs to train civilian forces for peacekeeping operations in conflict regions, including for the UN , the OSCE and the EU . In 1995 the ASPR received the UNESCO Prize for Peace Education together with the EPU . In 2000, the national exhibition “War or Peace. From the cult of violence to the culture of peace ”laid the foundations for the European Museum for Peace at Schlaining Castle.

organization

The ASPR is organized as a private, non-profit, non-partisan and independent association. Peter Kostelka was president until March 2019 , followed by Norbert Darabos in this function.

In addition to the office space, ASPR has set up a conference and seminar center at Burg Schlaining and operates the European Peace Museum. In the course of its establishment, the former synagogue of Schlaining was acquired and renovated and converted into a library for peace research. In addition, the "Haus International" with living and seminar rooms for EPU students and the seminar hotel "Hotel Burg Schlaining" are owned by the association. The ASPR also has another location in the federal capital Vienna .

research

The "State of Peacebuilding" conference, which has been taking place annually since 1984, is a research focus. The international conference deals with a current topic in peace and conflict research. In addition, the ASPR runs research projects that primarily deal with peace processes, conflict transformation and peacebuilding.

Publications

In addition to international academic publications, the ASPR operates two of its own publication series, the ASPR Reports, which deal with a topic in detail from events, and the ASPR Briefings, a short publication aimed primarily at political decision-makers.
