Peter Kostelka (born May 1, 1946 in Bad Bleiberg , Carinthia ) is an Austrian politician of the SPÖ .

Life

Peter Kostelka attended elementary school in Bleiberg-Kreuth as well as a secondary school and a federal high school in Klagenfurt. 1965-1967 he studied at the University of World Trade in Vienna , and subsequently at the University of Vienna Law , where he graduated 1,972th In 1971 he was studying in the USA and in 1972 took a course at the International Summer School of the University of Oslo .

In the course of his career he held several functions in the SPÖ, for example he was chairman of the SPÖ parliamentary club in the National Council from 1994 to 2000 . 1990–1994 he was State Secretary in the Federal Chancellery (for the public service ) in the Vranitzky government (III) . From July 1, 2001 to June 30, 2013, he was an ombudsman at the federal level, responsible for social affairs, transport, health, youth and the family.

From 2009 to 2013 he was Secretary General of the International Ombudsman Institute  (IOI), a global association of 135 independent local, regional and national ombudsman institutions. The general secretariat of the IOI is located in the Ombudsman's Office in Vienna.

From October 2013 he was President of the Austrian Study Center for Peace and Conflict Resolution (ÖSFK) in Schlaining . In March 2019, Norbert Darabos succeeded him in this role.

On April 16, 2018, he succeeded Karl Blecha as President of the Pensioners' Association Austria .
