International Ombudsman Institute

The International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) is an independent and apolitical international organization based in Vienna . The approximately 140 members are national, regional and local ombudsman institutions from around 75 countries.

The IOI was founded in 1978 and has regional groups in Africa, Asia, Australia and the Pacific Ocean, the Caribbean and Latin America, and North America and Europe. Through its work, it promotes the exchange of information and experience between ombudsman institutions worldwide.

The Ombudsman Board has been the seat of the General Secretariat of the IOI since June 2009. The General Secretariat is always headed by a member of the Ombudsman Board, until June 30, 2013 Peter Kostelka was Secretary General of the IOI, and Günther Kräuter has been Secretary General since July 1, 2013 .
