history

The 12/13 Schlaining Castle , built in the 19th century, was located on a strategically important north-south toll road . It was in 1441 by Emperor Friedrich III. pledged to the mercenary leader Andreas Baumkircher , who took it over in 1461, including the rulership, expanded it into a strong fortress and founded Stadtschlaining as a civil settlement. After a feud with Emperor Friedrich III. Baumkircher was executed in 1471. After the Baumkirchers died out, it fell to the Hungarian magnate family Batthyány from 1544 . During the second Turkish siege in 1683, Christoph Batthány joined the besiegers. This brought the Batthánys a tremendous loss of power after the Turkish defeat. Schlaining Castle thus lost its importance. In the second half of the 17th century, Jews settled in Schlaining, who were under the special protection of the Batthánys. In 1922 the last rabbi left Schlaining and moved to the Oberwart branch . The synagogue used as a library and two Jewish cemeteries still remind of this community today .

Schlaining Castle in the middle of the 19th century

Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Városszalóna be used. After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ). Stadtschlaining has been a municipality since 1991 (through VO 80).

From 1988 to 2014 the European Peace University was located in the city. In 1995 she co-organized the international conference “Against Racism, Violence and Discrimination”, the result of which was the Schlaining Declaration .
