history
The first reliable mention of the place Großpetersdorf comes from a document of the Hungarian King Ladislaus IV from the year 1273. From the year 1539 comes a land register in which the place is mentioned as "Pettersdorf". According to documents, the market survey must have been carried out before 1565. From the middle of the 16th century, the Count Batthyány settled Croats in "Kleinpetersdorf". When the Josephine land survey took place in the years 1782 to 1785, the community was named "Markt Gros Petersdorf or Nemet Sz. Mihaly". An economic upswing began until the outbreak of the First World War.
Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Nagyszentmihály be used. After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919.
On March 26, 1921, Emperor Karl I, traveling incognito, was recognized during a short stay in Großpetersdorf and greeted with joy by the population. Karl was on his way to Szombathely , accompanied by Count Thomas Erdődy from Rotenturm , in his ultimately unsuccessful attempt to restore his royal dignity in Hungary in the course of the first attempt at restoration .
The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ). Towards the end of the Second World War , Großpetersdorf and its surroundings became a combat zone. In 1971 the municipality of Jabing was connected to Großpetersdorf as a result of the Burgenland municipal structure improvement law coming into force . In 1992, Großpetersdorf and Jabing separated again by resolution of the local council. Großpetersdorf has been a market town since 2000 (through LGBl. No. 18/2000).
