Wolfau is a market town with 1411 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Oberwart district in Burgenland in Austria . The Hungarian place name of the municipality is Vasfarkasfalva .

geography

The municipality is located in southern Burgenland in the area of ​​the confluence of the Lafnitz and Stögersbach rivers. Wolfau is the only place in the municipality.

history

Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Vasfarkasfalva be used. After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).

In addition to Mayor Walter Pfeiffer (ÖVP) and Deputy Mayor Manfred Lukitsch (ÖVP), the executive councils René Bischof (SPÖ), Veronika Putz (ÖVP) and Roland Unger (FPÖ) also belong to the community board.

The mayor of the market town is Walter Pfeiffer (ÖVP), who also heads the town hall.

Pfeiffer succeeded Erich Lehner (ÖVP) in the election on October 6, 2002, who retired for reasons of age. In the direct election of the mayor on October 1, 2017, Pfeiffer was able to prevail in the first ballot with 55.26% and thus entered his fourth term of office. Rene Bischof started as a new competitor of the SPÖ, who achieved 31.18%. Also new was the entry of the FPÖ, whose top candidate David Deutsch came up with 13.55%.

At the constituent meeting of the municipal council on October 20, 2017, Manfred Lukitsch (ÖVP) was elected Vice Mayor.
