history
Words mountain originated in the 13th century as a daughter settlement of Wörth an der Lafnitz . The residents named the newly founded places after abandoned places in their homeland. This is how the name Wörth came about.
The settlement emerged from "Kellerstöckln", which were used to store the harvests from the orchards and vineyards, meadows and fields on the slopes east of Wörth. These basement floors were expanded and continued to be managed. Counts Széchényi , Kottulinsky and Batthyány owned this area at that time.
The place Wörther Berg was written until the beginning of the 20th century .
Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had to because of the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Vörthegy be used. After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919 . The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).
23 residents died in the First World War.
After the end of the First World War, the economic situation was bad, as the Lafnitz was now the border between Austria and Hungary . As a result, Wortberg was cut off from Wörth, with whom it formed a single economic unit. For this reason, the population was forced to engage in smuggling. There were often nightly raids and shootings. Only with the connection of Burgenland to Austria did things become quieter and the economy also improved. This boom ended in 1926. This was followed by unemployment, price increases and the inapplicability of products. Therefore the connection to the German Reich was welcomed. When the Second World War broke out, the mood changed. 26 men died at the front, another 16 are missing.
From 1971 to 1991, words mountain belonged to the municipality of Ollersdorf . With the help of several local residents, words mountain became an independent municipality again in 1991.
