history

Neustift already existed at the time of the first letter of foundation for the dominion of Güssing Castle in 1428. In this letter of gift, as in other documents, the place is called Gederfew, or Gödörfö, as it was later spelled. The first German designation Neustift comes in a German document from the year 1604 before, and in the parochial parish registers the place name of 1669 to Noistift, Nuistift, Neistift and Neustift is written.

Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Újtelep be used. After the end of the First World War, after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).

In the course of the Municipal Structure Improvement Act of September 1, 1970, Kleinmürbisch was combined with the previously independent municipalities of Glasing , Großmürbisch , Inzenhof , Neustift bei Güssing and Tschanigraben to form the new large municipality of Neustift bei Güssing on January 1, 1971 . After a ruling by the Constitutional Court, the amalgamation was lifted on May 31, 1991 and the large community was separated again. Since then, Neustift bei Güssing has only consisted of the original cadastral community.
