history

The remains of a medieval moated castle can still be found on the Ried Schloßriegel, which probably went down around 1300. The place was raised to the market in 1647.

Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Strem be used. After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).

At the end of the Second World War , numerous Hungarian forced laborers were employed in the construction of the south-east wall in Strem. The evacuation route for the construction sections to the north also led through the town. The final phase crimes committed there and in the neighboring community of Heiligenbrunn were dealt with in two trials before the People's Court in Graz in 1948 . The family Legath from German Ehrensdorf rescued shortly before the war ended at risk of their lives, two Hungarian Jews from certain death and was for 1994 by the Israeli Holocaust -Gedenkstätte Yad Vashem as Righteous Among the Nations award.

On January 1, 1971, the previously independent municipalities of Deutsch Ehrensdorf, Moschendorf, Steinfurt, Strem and Sumetendorf were merged to form the new large municipality of Strem in accordance with the Municipal Structure Improvement Act of September 1, 1970.

Strem has been a market town since 1997.

Parish council

In addition to Mayor Bernhard Deutsch (ÖVP) and Deputy Mayor Edmund Nemeth (ÖVP), the executive councils Herbert Deutsch (SPÖ), Claudia Gratzer (ÖVP) and Engelbert Kopfer (ÖVP) also belong to the community board.

The following were appointed mayor: Claudia Gratzer (ÖVP, for Sumetendorf), Engelbert Kopfer (ÖVP, for German Ehrensdorf) and Vice Mayor Edmund Nemeth (ÖVP, for Steinfurt).

mayor

Mayor is Bernhard Deutsch (ÖVP).

After the mayor's direct election on October 7, 2007, he succeeded Werner Trinkl (ÖVP), who no longer took up position because of the allegations made against him about the Strem senior citizens' center, which ultimately proved unfounded. Bernhard Deutsch was chosen with 75.72%. His competitor was Dietmar Stimpfl (SPÖ), who only got 24.28%. He came into a difficult legacy, because the community was deeply in debt due to the construction of the senior citizen center - the Court of Auditors put the debt level at eight million euros - and major differences with the SPÖ, which led to the SPÖ faction in protest at the end of 2009 resigned against the financial misery because of the nursing home. Nevertheless, Bernhard Deutsch was able to prevail in the mayoral election on October 7, 2012 with 75.61%. This time, the competitor was Herbert Deutsch (SPÖ & willing to participate), who achieved 24.39%. The same candidates stood for election on October 1, 2017, in which Bernhard Deutsch (ÖVP) was again able to prevail with 74.21% against Herbert Deutsch (SPÖ, 25.79%).

In the constituent meeting of the municipal council, Edmund Nemeth (ÖVP) was elected Vice Mayor.

The head of the municipal office is Josef Weinhofer.
