history
Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Szentelek be used. After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ). Stegersbach has been a market town since 1583 (conferred again by Rudolf II in 1391, 1583).
As in many other places in Burgenland, Croatian colonists were settled in Stegersbach in the 16th century (Croatian-Stegersbach), whereby the proportion of Germans and Croats - similar to the places Antau (Otava), Kittsee (Gijeca) and Sigleß (Cikleš) - have always been balanced in the past. Since the end of the 19th century, however, the proportion of Croats has been steadily decreasing, so that today only very few inhabitants - if at all - can be counted in the ethnic group of Burgenland Croats (proportion of Croats in the total population - 1880: 37%, 1910: 30, 2%, 1934: 11%, 1971: 1.7%, 2001: 0.8%). Until the deportations in World War II, Stegersbach also had a Roma population of around 15%.
