The new Roman Catholic parish church of Stegersbach is in the immediate vicinity of the old parish church of Stegersbach in the center of the municipality of Stegersbach ( Hungarian : "Szentelek" ; Croatian : "Santalek" ) in the Güssing district in Burgenland . It is consecrated to the Holy Spirit and forms a parish association with the parish of Ollersdorf in the Deanery of Güssing of the Diocese of Eisenstadt . The church is a listed building .

history

Since the Aegidius Church was too small and the entire parish could no longer hold, a possible new building was discussed in the 1960s. Originally they wanted to expand the existing church with an addition for around 300 people, but this was rejected. In 1965 Alois Tonweber was appointed pastor of Stegersbach. The diocesan bishop Stephan László recorded in the appointment decree the wish for a new church to be built. In 1967 the idea began to take shape and in 1968 preparations began. In the following year a draft was presented and pledges for donations to finance the new building were collected. This phase was completed at the end of 1969. A church building committee headed by former governor Johann Wagner and former mayor Johann Kapesky was commissioned to implement the project. The planning was carried out by the "3 P" studio, which consisted of the architects Anton, Egon and Eva Presoly.

At the beginning of the planning, only the construction of a church was considered, but the plans were later expanded to include the substructure and the rectory. As a result, a diverse community and communication center was created with a church, parish center and parsonage under one roof, which met the requirements of modern pastoral care.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on July 4, 1971, and the foundation stone for the church and parish center was laid on October 31 of the same year . The church was consecrated by Diocesan Bishop László on October 26, 1974 after the work on the building and furnishings had been completed .

Architecture and equipment

The church is a steel frame structure , the walls of which are covered with polyester resin panels coated with marble sand. Wood was used for the suspended ceilings and ceramic coverings for the floors. The design idea of the church is a "spiral to God and a staircase to heaven".

This means a deviation from traditional church building. The floor plan was in the form of a spiral, at the beginning of which is the church entrance. The church is designed as a central space - the closer you get to the center, the altar , the steeper and higher the spatial spiral becomes, at the highest point of which there is a cross. Exactly below this cross is the brightest point of the church - the altar. The individual segments and components are separated by vertical and horizontal glass surfaces, the arrangement of which enables uniform illumination of the church space throughout the day. However, the glass surfaces themselves are not visible. The altar area has been lowered so that visitors can optically take part in the liturgical celebrations from anywhere in the church. The benches were also arranged according to the shape of the room. These offer seating for around 380 people, and there is also standing room for around 400.

The church was furnished with works by the Burgenland sculptor Thomas Resetarits .

altar

The altar was made of Lasa marble . It rests on three stands, which are considered a symbol of the Trinity . The table surface forms a circle as a sign of the unity in the Holy Spirit. The vertical surfaces are adorned with three reliefs , which have an eye-like shape and are intended to reflect the work of God.

In the center of the first eye is Mary with the child and the four beings from the Old Testament who return in the Revelation of John and became the evangelist symbols (lion, bull, man and eagle). To the left of this are the creation with Adam and Eve and the fall of man. On the right is the raising of Lazarus .

The middle eye indicates the central event during Holy Mass . The crucified one is depicted in the middle , on the left under the cross are those who persevere, on the right those who are disappointed and turn away. In the left outer field the Last Supper is shown, on the right you can see Christ with the Apostle Thomas in the middle of the apostolic community.

In the third eye, the symbol of the Holy Spirit dominates. The many heads on the left and the family represented on the right symbolize the arrival and work of the Holy Spirit. The reliefs are shown without eyes. This should give the viewer the chance to think into the scene and define his own point of view.

Further equipment

The three-dimensional form of the altar was taken up again in the ambo , the baptismal font , the sessio and the holy water font .

The sacramental cross, which contains the tabernacle , is designed as a cross that is entwined with the problems of humanity. Twelve aluminum casts were attached as consecration crosses in the middle of the twelve wall segments.

The artist created the strict columnar depiction of the Madonna and Child, inspired by the text of the song “Glorworth'ge Königin”, which speaks of “Mary as the pillar of the Church”.

Parish center

Below the church is the parish center , which consists of a large multi-purpose hall and several small rooms and ancillary rooms. The rectory adjoins the church and includes the necessary living and administrative rooms.

Joseph Chapel

In 2006 the aisle was transformed into a chapel dedicated to St. Joseph . It is optically separated from the rest of the nave by a glass wall and the new organ. For worship there is a tabernacle column with armored glass shrine for the monstrance. To the left and right of the column there are two statues on pillars. One represents the "Queen of Love" and the other St. Joseph with the angel who brings him God's instructions.
