The village was part of the Güssing rule of the Batthyány family . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Újhegy be used. Since 1921, the place has belonged to the then newly founded federal state of Burgenland.

mayor

Novoszel came to this position under tragic circumstances, because his predecessor Daniel Neubauer (ÖVP), who was also head of the municipal office and has been in office since 2007, had to undergo an appendectomy on March 27, 2016 in the Güssing hospital , which resulted in secondary bleeding . The emergency operation resulted in cardiovascular arrest . After successful resuscitation and transfer to the intensive care unit , organ failure began . The only 49-year-old was then transferred to the Graz regional hospital, where he died on March 20. The surgeon accused by the prosecutor was found guilty in the Eisenstadt Regional Court on April 20, 2017 and sentenced to a fine of 18,000 euros for negligent homicide.

Until the new election on July 24, 2016, Vice Mayor Birgit Karner (SPÖ and independents) took over the leadership of the community on an interim basis. In the election, Novoszel prevailed with 518 votes (63.09%) against Karner with 303 votes (36.91%). In the election on October 1, 2017, Novoszel was re-elected mayor with 59.98% compared to Karner, which came to 40.02%. In the constituent meeting of the municipal council, Birgit Karner was re-elected as Vice Mayor.
