history

Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Pusztaszentmihály be used. After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ). Sankt Michael im Burgenland has been a market town since 1977 (by VO 63, 12/1977).

Economy and Infrastructure

The community area is crossed by the Güssinger Straße (B57), which leads north-west to Stegersbach and south-east to Güssing . Großpetersdorfer Landesstraße L106, which branches off from Güssinger Straße at the southern end of the village, runs through the local area of ​​St. Michael.

Parish council

In addition to Mayor Erich Sziderits (ÖVP) and Deputy Mayor Franz Eberhardt (SPÖ), the executive councils Otto Horvath (SPÖ), Reinhard Karlovits (ÖVP) and Bernd Kremsner (ÖVP) also belong to the community board.

Mayor is Erich Sziderits (ÖVP).

Sziderits succeeded Johann Strauss (SPÖ) in 1997 after the ÖVP had taken over the majority in the local council (at that time there was no direct election of the mayor). In the direct election of the mayor on October 1, 2017, Sziderits was confirmed in his office with 62.07% and thus entered his fifth term. As in 2012, the competitor was Vice Mayor Franz Eberhardt (SPÖ), who achieved 37.93%.

In the constituent meeting of the municipal council, Franz Eberhardt (SPÖ) was re-elected Vice Mayor.

AUT Sankt Michael im Burgenland COA.gif For the first time, the coat of arms was awarded by the Burgenland state government on April 13, 1977 following an application by the municipality on March 8, 1977. At the meeting on June 15, 1992, the Burgenland provincial government granted St. Michael the right to use the municipal coat of arms after the municipality was separated.
