Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Alsómedves be used. After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).
Like many other places in Burgenland, Großmürbisch was affected to a greater extent by Croatian colonization in the 16th century. Since the post-war period, the share of the Burgenland Croatian ethnic group has declined sharply and now only has a few speakers (1934: 43.4%; 2001: 1.1%).

mayor
Mayor is Jürgen Kurta (ÖVP).
In the direct mayor election on October 7, 2007, Siegfried Klucsarits (SPÖ) prevailed with 51.35% against Borka (ÖVP, 48.65%), who should have succeeded Franz Jandrasits (ÖVP), and won for them SPÖ the title of mayor. Klucsarits was at the head of the municipality for ten years, because in the election on October 1, 2017, the previous Vice Mayor Jürgen Kurta was elected mayor with 60.21% of the voters.
