history

Tobaj is first mentioned in a document in 1428 as Thobajd .

The place belonged - like the whole of Burgenland until 1920/21 - to Hungary (German West Hungary). After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919.

The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).

According to the Municipal Structure Improvement Act of September 1, 1970 , the formerly independent municipalities of Tobaj, Deutsch Tschantschendorf, Punitz, Croatian Tschantschendorf, Hasendorf and Tudersdorf were merged to form the municipality of Tobaj with effect from January 1, 1971.
