St. Kathrein in Burgenland ( Hungarian : Pósaszentkatalin , Croatian: Katalena ) is a village in the Austrian municipality of Deutsch Schützen-Eisenberg in the Oberwart district .

St. Kathrein in Burgenland was first mentioned in 1378 as Posafalva . In the 17th century, the healing spring near the Magdalena Chapel was visited by many pilgrims, as certain miracles were attributed to it.

The place was repopulated by Croats in the 16th century. Until the interwar period, the Croatian population element predominated, since then Croatianity has been declining or disappearing.

history

The first documented mention of St. Kathrein was in 1489 under the name Zenthkatherina. This name goes back to a will from Johann Ellerbach, in which the place St. Kathrein, in the form of Zenthkatherina, a possible reference to the name of the wife of the last Ellerbacher, is mentioned for the first time in a document in the border description of the goods. The second documentary mention was made in 1496 under Posafalva alias Zenthkatherynazzon .

For the place name, Zenthkathalina in 1610 , Szent Katalin in 1698 and Sankt Katerein in 1786 are occupied. The spelling Sankt Kathrein in Burgenland was established in 1937. However, the place name was changed from January 1, 1944 until the end of the war to St. Kathrein an der Pinka , since then the name adopted from 1937 has been used. In the 16th century the place was donated with Croats - Erdödy and Zriny -, the last mention of it. The conscription of the Eberau rule from 1617 shows almost only Croatian names and the visit from that year calls St. Kathrein Croatian. Even the church visitation Patakfalu of 1697 describes the whole parish as "pure Croatica". In 1697, 1846, 1898 and 1900 St. Kathrein was predominantly Croatian, the proportion of the Croatian population was rated high in 1921 after the annexation of Burgenland to Austria.

VD Martin Jernits named 1954 as the reasons for the decline in the Croatian population:

  1. The nearest Croatian settlements are too far away
  2. German-language lessons at the St. Kathrein elementary school
  3. German-language media only
  4. Mixed marriage (Germans and Croats)

Therefore, the proportion of Croats has continuously decreased and today only older people can speak the Croatian language. In 1925 a war memorial was erected in the town center, which was inaugurated on October 17, 1926 under Dean Osztovits. On April 12, 1945 - towards the end of the Second World War - Russian combat troops came into the place and in the following days Hungarian occupation troops moved up. Many local residents had already fled to the Punitz Forest or Croatian Ehrensdorf with some pigs and cows (self-sufficiency) out of fear of the Soviet troops , but they returned home to their houses in St. Kathrein after a few days.

From 1895 to 1906 the place belonged to the municipality of Eberau, but from 1907 to Deutsch Schützen. In 1971, the political independence of the parish of St. Kathrein, which is now part of the large parish of Deutsch-Schützen-Eisenberg, ended, as did the long-standing independent parish of St. Kathrein, which has been part of the Deutsch-Schützen parish association since 1975.
