Kukmirn (Hungarian Kukmér ) is a market town with 1983 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Güssing district of the Austrian Burgenland .

The municipality includes the following four localities (population in brackets as of January 1, 2020):

• Eisenhüttl (138) with Fedenberg
• Kukmirn (708) with Buchberg, Hafnergraben, Schermanngraben, Ungerberg, Watzen, Weingartengraben and cell mountain
• Limbach (554) with Greutern, Gründelsberg, Haufenberg, Limbacher Berghäuser and cells mountain
• Neusiedl (583) with Fedenberg, Heutal, Kroboteck, Ledenberg and Schrötten

The community consists of the cadastral communities Eisenhüttl, Kukmirn, Limbach and Neusiedl bei Güssing.

history

Kukmirn was first mentioned in 1185 in a document in a border description about the boundaries of the monastery Güssing against Medusbach (Dobersdorf) and Witin (Fedenberg - today a reed name).

The origin of the place name is not known. The interpretations range from the wild pumpkin (" Cucurbita ") to the descent from a Hungarian noble family ("blue duke") to a reference to the culture of the Celts .

The place Eisenhüttl (Jezerjani) is part of the settlement area of ​​the Burgenland Croats . Like many other Burgenland villages, it was repopulated by Croatian colonists in the 16th century. The local population was still predominantly Croatian-speaking in the interwar period; Since the post-war period, the proportion of the Croatian ethnic group has declined sharply and was recently only around 11% (2001).

Like all of Burgenland, Kukmirn belonged to Hungary (German West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Kukmér be used.

After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).

In the course of the municipal structure improvement law of September 1, 1970, the previously independent municipalities Eisenhüttl, Kukmirn, Limbach and Neusiedl bei Güssing were merged to form the large municipality of Kukmirn on January 1, 1971.

In 1982 the municipality of Kukmirn was granted market rights.

On June 1, 2011, the municipal council passed the complete agreement on the plan for the division of assets and thus the separation of the parent community “Marktgemeinde Kukmirn” into the new communities “Limbach” and “Kukmirn” as well as the submission of the application to the state government for a decree a separation ordinance . However, the country rejected the separation with reference to an allegedly non-existent sustainable viability of the individual communities in early 2012.

Parish council

In addition to Mayor Werner Kemetter (ÖVP) and Deputy Mayor Klaus Kroboth (BMK), the executive councils include Franz Kropf (ÖVP), Ute Lagler (SPÖ), Julius Reichl (BMK), Siegfried Sinkovits (ÖVP) and Klaus Weber (ÖVP) on.

Ute Lagler (SPÖ) was elected community treasurer and Klaus Weber (ÖVP) was elected by the community council as environmental community councilor.

The following were appointed mayors: Siegfried Sinkovits (ÖVP, for Eisenhüttl), Franz Kropf (ÖVP, for Kukmirn) and Klaus Weber (ÖVP, for Limbach). In Neusiedl the function is carried out by Mayor Werner Kemetter himself.

After Franz Hoanzl (ÖVP), who had headed the municipality since February 26, 2007, no longer ran the direct mayor election on October 1, 2017 as reasons of age, Werner Kemetter, Klaus Kroboth (list of citizens of the market town of Kukmirn) and Ute Lagler ( SPÖ) three candidates for his successor. Kemetter was already trusted by 54.77% of voters in the first ballot, taking the place of Hoanzl. Kroboth got 30.64% and Lagler had to be satisfied with 14.59%. Mayor Kemetter was sworn in on October 10, 2017 by District Chief Nicole Wild.

In the constituent meeting of the municipal council on October 23, 2017, Kroboth was elected Vice Mayor.
