history

As a result of the Turkish Wars, families from Croatia moved to the area in the 16th century. Their settlement was first mentioned in a document in 1577. Like all of Burgenland, the place belonged to Hungary (German-West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest of Hungarian name Stinacz be used. After the end of the First World War , German West Hungary was awarded to Austria in 1919 after tough negotiations in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon . The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).

On July 26, 1944, an American Boeing B-17 bomber crashed after a dogfight with German fighters in the municipality of Stinatz. Six of the nine crew members were able to save themselves by parachute.

Stinatz has been a market town since July 2, 1977. At the festivities at which the Heimathaus was also opened, Federal President Rudolf Kirchschläger and Burgenland Governor Theodor Kery were present.

1995 bomb attack

On February 6, 1995 around 11 a.m., two days after the quadruple murder in Oberwart , Erich Preissler, an employee of the Burgenland environmental service , was torn to pieces by a booby trap belonging to the bomber Franz Fuchs . In addition, letter bombs had been addressed to two Burgenland-Croat women before and after , but their detonation did not hurt either the Green politician Terezija Stoisits or Angela Resetarits. In a bus shelter in the neighboring community of Ollersdorf there was a letter of confession from the Bavarian Liberation Army "BBA", which read among other things: "Sifkovits, Grandits, Stoisits, Resetarits and Janisch back to Dalmatia."
