Baía Formosa , officially Município de Baía Formosa (German Beautiful Bay , so called by the Portuguese in 1612), is the southernmost coastal city of the state of Rio Grande do Norte in northeastern Brazil . It became independent as a municipality in 1958 and has 9,271 inhabitants (2019 estimate) on an area of 247,484 km². It is about 100 km to the capital Natal in the north and about 120 km to João Pessoa in the south.

Almost all of the residents live in the still quiet fishing village, the area is lonely, to the north there are almost 10 undeveloped kilometers, to the south to the village Sagi on the border to neighboring Paraíba as much as 15 km: a rarity in Brazil, where sandy coasts are accessible almost everywhere are. Dolphins come to within a few meters of the shore.

Baía Formosa still exudes traditional tranquility, despite the first pensions on the steep coast on the edge of the city center. A few kilometers inland is the entrance to a private nature reserve Mata Estrela with the last 20 km² of original coastal jungle ( Mata Atlântica ) of the state and a lake, Lagoa da Araraquara , which is also called Lagoa da Coca Cola because of its color . The hinterland is otherwise determined by extensive sugar cane plantations . In addition to the cliffs, the old fisherman's cemetery is worth seeing.

Italo Ferreira , the surfing world champion 2019, comes from Baia Formosa.
