The Austrian federal government Vranitzky III was formed after the National Council election on October 7, 1990 . In this election, the SPÖ was able to maintain its mandate status, the ÖVP lost 17 seats, 15 of them in favor of the FPÖ . A grand coalition was nevertheless formed again .
Federal President Kurt Waldheim appointed the Vranitzky III cabinet on December 17, 1990 . Six months later, the ÖVP replaced the Vice Chancellor. The grand coalition achieved a historic success on June 12, 1994: In the referendum on Austria's accession to the European Union , 66.6% of the participants voted yes. (The accession came into force on January 1, 1995.)
The government resigned on October 11, 1994 , two days after the next National Council election, and was entrusted with the continuation of business by the Federal President until the appointment of the Federal Government Vranitzky IV on November 29, 1994.
