Federal President Kurt Waldheim appointed the Vranitzky III cabinet on December 17, 1990 . Six months later, the ÖVP replaced the Vice Chancellor. The grand coalition achieved a historic success on June 12, 1994: In the referendum on Austria's accession to the European Union , 66.6% of the participants voted yes. (The accession came into force on January 1, 1995.)

The government resigned on October 11, 1994 , two days after the next National Council election, and was entrusted with the continuation of business by the Federal President until the appointment of the Federal Government Vranitzky IV on November 29, 1994.
