Volker Michael Plangg (born June 27, 1953 in Bludenz ) is an Austrian conductor , composer , arranger and author.

Life

Volker Plangg attended elementary school and grammar school in Bludenz. In 1972 he began his music studies at the Salzburg Mozarteum in the subjects of piano, conducting and composition. In 1979 he finished his studies at the Musikhochschule Freiburg .

From 1980 until today Plangg has worked at numerous theaters and with various orchestras as a guest conductor and in leading artistic positions (e.g. Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern , Nationaltheater Mannheim , Tiroler Landestheater Innsbruck , Staatstheater Kassel , Metropoltheater Berlin , Deutsches Theater Munich ). 1987–1989 Plangg was visiting professor at the Berlin University of the Arts . In 1990 he worked on Broadway in New York , in the same year he was the premiere conductor and musical director of the Webber production Das Phantom der Oper in Hamburg .

From 1992 to 1996 Plangg was a permanent guest conductor at the Theater des Westens in Berlin. From 1995 to 2003 he held the position of chief conductor of the Dresden State Operetta. In this capacity he brought u. a. the musicals Aspects of Love ( Andrew Lloyd Webber ) and Victor / Victoria ( Henry Mancini ) are premiered in German. He performed his own work Rasputin in a revised version in 2000 at the Dresden State Operetta. At the same time, Plangg u. a. at the Volkstheater Rostock , at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe and at the Volksoper Vienna .

In 1990 he wrote the opera musical Strannik - the Rasputin story - for Jeunesse musicales Deutschland, together with the lyricist and director Hartmut H. Forche . In 2001 the ballet Snow White, the Mirror and the Prince was commissioned by the Thuringian State Theater in Eisenach. His Colored Circles for accordion and brass quintet was created in 2009 for the Austrian Sonus Brass Ensemble . The cycle The Devious Dogs of Time was created in 2011 for the opera singer Roman Trekel . Plangg wrote the orchestral work Hymne in 2013 on behalf of the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden. The musical opera Katharina Kepler was created in 2019 together with the lyricist Hartmut H. Forche on behalf of the Pforzheim City Theater. His compositional work is characterized by the inclusion of jazz and rock elements as well as non-European style influences and is equally dedicated to orchestral and chamber music, vocal works and works for the stage.

Plangg lives in Dresden and Berlin and works as a freelance conductor a. a. at WDR Cologne, at the Halle Opera House (premiere of the musical Edgar Allan Poe by Eric Woolfson ) and at the Rostock Volkstheater.

In 2016 his novel Der Klangwandler was published .
