The Gymnasium Bludenz (short: BG BRG BORG Bludenz ) is a general high school in Bludenz in the Austrian Vorarlberg .

history

Founded in 1939

The later grammar school was approved by a decree of October 4, 1939 by the then Reich Ministry for Internal and Cultural Affairs as a “State High School for Boys” in the “district town” of Bludenz.
After the financial means for the construction of a school building were lacking, the school was housed in the south wing of the Dominican convent of St. Peter (founded in 1278 by Count Hugo I. von Werdenberg-Heiligenberg).

Opening in 1940

The first school year 1939/40 could only start after adaptation work with the opening ceremony on January 13, 1940 with 41 students. Girls were only admitted in the second year of existence, 1940/41. The school year 1944/45 had to be repeated due to a lack of teachers and numerous air raids.

A military hospital was set up on the school premises in February 1945 and the classes were moved to the elementary school. In May 1945 a Moroccan mule company of the French occupying forces moved into the monastery.

Schools in St. Peter's Monastery (1950–1961)

In September 1950, lessons began in the premises of the St. Peter monastery in the form of an Austrian state secondary school and in 1948 the first students were able to take their Matura (matriculation examination).

The smallest classroom in the school was colloquially called "the hole" - it was on the ground floor and only had a barred window to the school yard. The lack of space in the inadequate premises of the monastery became more and more serious and could be alleviated in the short term by the construction of a school barrack in 1952 in the monastery meadow in front of the main entrance opposite the school building. The building, in which there was space for two classrooms and two teaching material rooms, was supported by the Vorarlberger Illwerke and the municipality of Bludenz.

Until 1961, the students had to move to the Bludenzer Stadtsaal for physical education. Football and athletics were only possible on the Unterstein sports field.

New school building in Unterfeld (1956–1961)

It was Ludwig Kert, head of the school since 1947, who built the new school in Unterfeld.
When he returned from America, England and France in May 1952, Chancellor Leopold Figl stopped in Bludenz, where Director Kert urgently advised him to build a new school. The city of Bludenz provided the building site of 22,000 m 2 in the Unterfeld free of charge and with the groundbreaking on September 21, 1956, construction of the new school building began.

In July 1961, Federal President Adolf Schärf inspected the progress of the new building together with Vorarlberg Governor Ulrich Ilg . After a five-year construction period, the modern school building was handed over to its current location in Unterstein on December 10, 1961. The wall design in the foyer was carried out in 1963 by the Bregenzerwald artist Leopold Fetz .

With a rapid increase in the number of pupils, the professors' apartments had to be converted into classes in the 1970s and the former St. Josef Mission House housed some emergency classes until 1980.

Extensions (1980 and 2002-2005)

The extension opened in 1980 in the east was able to alleviate the enormous space requirement for a short time. Director Dür took over the management of the grammar school in 1985, advocated the construction of an urgently needed third gym and this hall was opened in 1998.
In the years 2002 to 2005 the school was completely renovated under the direction of Fröwis and an additional south wing was added.

In 2015 the BG Bludenz celebrated its 75th anniversary. Helmut Abl headed the BG Bludenz for eleven years from 2008 to 2019. Gerald Fenkart took over the management of the grammar school in the 2019/20 school year.

In this type of school, the focus is on mathematics, biology and environmental studies, physics, chemistry and descriptive geometry. At the beginning of the fifth grade, you can choose between Italian, French and Latin.
The three-year class in descriptive geometry takes place from the sixth grade using a CAD program exclusively on the computer.

Short forms

In addition to the long form of the grammar school, Bludenz also offers two branches in the BORG. These types of school lead to the Matura in four years . At the BORG, students choose between Italian, French and Latin.
