Pfalztheater

The Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern is the only three-part theater in the Palatinate, which is sponsored by the District Association of the Palatinate and is based in the city of Kaiserslautern .

history

The first theater in Kaiserslautern was financed in 1862 by Andreas Müller, called Spittelmüller, the owner of the Spittelmühle in Kaiserslautern. This also supported the first seasons of this theater. The building stood in today's Karl-Marx-Strasse (then Theaterstrasse ) on the corner of Gasstrasse. It was destroyed by fire a few years later and rebuilt by Andreas Müller. In 1874 the theater was transferred to a stock corporation. The shares were taken over by the city of Kaiserslautern in 1897, so that it has been a city theater since then. The theater grew in the first decades of the 20th century through cooperation with other Palatinate theaters, especially with Pirmasens and Zweibrücken , to become a municipal opera of the Palatinate. Even in the first years of the Second World War, gaming operations continued until the bombing of August 14, 1944 completely destroyed the building. As early as October 1945, gaming continued in the rooms of the “Capitol” cinema (Dr.-Rudolf-Breitscheid-Str. 58). A new sponsoring company was founded in 1950 and the “Film-Palast” cinema on the torch roundabout was converted into a municipal theater, which was inaugurated in September 1950. In 1968, the Palatinate District Association became the sponsor of the Palatinate Theater. Since then, the city of Kaiserslautern has been granting institutional funding every year and taking on the maintenance of the building (not including the building maintenance for stage equipment). As the sponsor, the Palatinate District Association assumes all expenses for the ongoing operation of the Palatinate Theater, as well as the building maintenance for the stage equipment. The revenues generated from entrance fees etc. flow into the budget of the Palatinate District Association for the benefit of the sponsor. The state of Rhineland-Palatinate grants institutional funding every year.

As early as 1976, the demand for a new building was discussed in the city council because the old cinema building was unsuitable for larger projects and was still only provisionally furnished. But it was not until 1995 that the new building at Willy-Brandt-Platz near the fruit hall was completed. The construction was financed with funds from the Pfalztheater legal entity, the District Association of the Palatinate, the State of Rhineland-Palatinate and the City of Kaiserslautern.

On September 30, 1995, the Dreispartenhaus ( music theater , drama and ballet ) was opened by the then director Pavel Fieber with the first performances . In his laudatory speech, the chairman of the German cultural council, August Everding , praised the unusually large and high-quality new building as an investment in art and culture worth emulating.

The first piece to be performed in the new house was Nathan the Wise .

Data

The house houses two venues: the large house with a capacity of almost 680 seats (for concerts and children's performances up to 730 seats) and the workshop stage , which can seat around 100 spectators.

The Pfalztheater currently employs around 335 people from various fields.
