Jiří Stárek (born July 13, 1923 in Močovice , † September 25, 2011 in Prague ) was a Czech conductor .

Life

Stárek completed his conducting studies at the Prague Music Academy as a student of Václav Talich and Karel Ančerl . From 1952 to 1968 he was conductor of the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra and, from 1964, also chief conductor of the Prague Radio Orchestra.

In addition to his work in the Czechoslovak Radio in Prague, he worked from 1963 to 1968 as the artistic director of the chamber ensemble Collegium Musicum Pragense , with which he made radio and vinyl recordings. Between 1961 and 1962 Stárek was chief conductor of the Prague Music Theater and directed the Czech premiere of the Brecht / Weill opera Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny .

Stárek received prizes from the Czechoslovak Radio and from OIRT for the radio premieres of the operas Die Nase ( Dmitri Dmitrijewitsch Schostakowitsch ), Der Gefangene ( Luigi Dallapiccola ), Columbus ( Werner Egk ) and the symphonies by Karl Amadeus Hartmann . In 1968 Stárek emigrated and began an international career.

He directed the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, RSO Stuttgart , RSO Munich, RSO Frankfurt, the Munich Philharmonic , Stuttgart Philharmonic, Bamberg Symphony , Hamburg Symphony , Berlin Symphony , Oslo Philharmony, Nouvel Philharmonic Orchestra, Radio France Paris, Tonkünstlerorchester Wien, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra , BBC Concert Orchestra , San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, City of London Sinfonia, Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra / New Zealand.

From 1976 to 1980 he was chief conductor of the Sinfonietta RIAS Berlin, 1981 to 1984 chief conductor and artistic director of the Norwegian Symphony Orchestra Trondheim, 1988 principal guest conductor of the West Australia Symphony Orchestra Perth, 1989/1990 to 1992/1993 general music director of the Pfalztheater (Germany ) and from 1996/1997 to 1998/1999 chief conductor at the Prague State Opera .

Stárek also worked at the Frankfurt University of Music , where he held the position of dean for several years. In 1990 Stárek returned to the Prague concert podium. Since June 1, 2003, Stárek has been chief conductor of the Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra and since June 1, 2005, chief conductor.

Awards

On April 15, 2008 Stárek was honored by the Minister of Culture of the Czech Republic for his contribution to the dissemination of Czech culture with the award "Artis Bohemiae Amicis".
