history

The orchestra founded in 1893 by the piano manufacturer's son Hofrat Franz Kaim together with the Munich Philharmonic Choir was initially called the Kaim Orchestra and then the Orchestra of the Munich Concert Association before it was given its current name in 1928.

The orchestra first became internationally known under the direction of Felix Weingartner from 1898 to 1905. The orchestra took part in premieres of works by Gustav Mahler ( 4th and 8th symphonies ) under the direction of the composer in 1901 and 1910 . Wilhelm Furtwängler made his debut as a conductor in 1906. In 1911 Bruno Walter directed the posthumous world premiere of Mahler's Lied von der Erde . The orchestra's tradition of performing works by Anton Bruckner goes back to Ferdinand Löwe, who again led the orchestra from 1908 to 1914 . For example, Siegmund von Hausegger , who was general music director from 1920 to 1938, conducted two Bruckner symphonies when they were first performed with the Munich Philharmonic, which at the same time assumed the name that is valid today. Furthermore, works by Günter Bialas , Harald Genzmer and Luigi Nono had their world premieres with the Munich Philharmonic.

After the Second World War, the orchestra continued with the performance of the overture to Shakespeare's Midsummer Night 's Dream by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy under the direction of Eugen Jochum . In 1967 Rudolf Kempe became chief conductor, under his direction the orchestra visited the Soviet Union and for the first time received special attention worldwide. From 1979 until his death on August 14, 1996, Sergiu Celibidache in particular had a decisive influence on the image of the orchestra. He was followed from 1999 to 2004 by James Levine as chief conductor.

In May 2003 Christian Thielemann signed a 7-year contract as the new general music director. His term of office began on September 1, 2004, the contract was not extended, and Thielemann moved to the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden in 2012 . From the 2012 season until his death in July 2014, Lorin Maazel was chief conductor. In September 2015, Valery Gergiev became the orchestra's new chief conductor.

Concert halls

In 1895 the Art Nouveau architect Martin Dülfer created a concert hall for the “Kaim'sche Philharmonic Orchestra”, the “ Kaim Hall ” in Munich, Türkenstrasse 5, which was renamed “Tonhalle” in October 1905. On April 25, 1944, it was destroyed in a bomb attack and never rebuilt. From 1953 the Munich Philharmonic gave concerts in the Herkulessaal of the Munich Residence, which was built after the war . Since the opening of the Gasteig in 1985, the orchestra has again had its own concert hall with the Philharmonie im Gasteig.
