The Symphoniker Hamburg are a symphony orchestra in Hamburg . They are the residence orchestra of the Laeiszhalle Hamburg (Hamburger Musikhalle). The orchestra's chief conductor is Sylvain Cambreling . Daniel Kühnel is the director.

The Hamburg Symphony Orchestra regularly gives symphony, children's, chamber and film concerts in the Laeiszhalle Hamburg as well as operas and ballets in the Hamburg State Opera . The orchestra received international recognition through tours to countries such as Japan, USA, Great Britain, Italy, France, Spain, Scandinavia, Turkey, Poland and China. The popular open-air concerts in the inner courtyard of Hamburg's town hall are always sold out.

Major guest conductors were Charles Mackerras , Christian Thielemann , Peter Ruzicka , Horst Stein , Ralf Weikert and Sebastian Weigle . Some of the most famous soloists, such as Martha Argerich , Daniel Barenboim , Christian Tetzlaff , Elisabeth Leonskaja , Frank Peter Zimmermann , Edita Gruberová , Plácido Domingo and Grace Bumbry , performed with the orchestra.

In the 2019/2020 season, cellist Andrei Ioniță will be the orchestra's Artist in Residence . In 2011/2012 it was the violinist Guy Braunstein , in the 2012/2013 season it was the brothers Markus and Simon Stockhausen .

history

The Hamburg Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1957 by Ernst Markus . The first chief conductor was Robert Heger . István Kertész became the orchestra's permanent guest conductor . The orchestra has been officially recognized as an A-orchestra since January 2010 .
