Sebastian Weigle

Sebastian Weigle (* 1961 in Berlin ) is a German horn player and conductor .

Life

Sebastian Weigle studied horn , piano and conducting at the “Hanns Eisler” University of Music in Berlin . In 1987 he founded the Berlin Chamber Choir and later led the New Berlin Chamber Orchestra . He played 15 years as the first solo horn of the Staatskapelle Berlin . He was also a member of the “Vielharmonie” jazz orchestra in East Berlin. In 1993 he became chief conductor of the Brandenburg State Youth Symphony Orchestra , in 1994 Kapellmeister and 1997 first Kapellmeister at the State Opera Unter den Linden . He has made guest appearances at numerous opera houses, a. a. at the Dresden State Opera , the Frankfurt Opera , the Vienna Volksoper and the Vienna State Opera as well as the Metropolitan Opera in New York . In 2003 the magazine Opernwelt selected him as conductor of the year for the production of Frau ohne Schatten at the Frankfurt Opera with director Christof Nel, which he directed . From 2004 to 2009 Weigle was general music director of the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona . Since the 2008/2009 season he has been General Music Director of the Frankfurt Opera, succeeding Paolo Carignani . Weigle directed a new production of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (director: Katharina Wagner ) at the Bayreuth Festival from 2007 to 2011 . Debuts followed at the Zurich Opera House (2013), the Hamburg State Opera (2014), with the Wiener Symphoniker (2015) and at the Royal Opera House London (2018). Since 2019 Weigle has also been chief conductor of the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra Tokyo.




Weigle is a nephew of the conductor and music teacher Jörg-Peter Weigle and the brother of the violist Friedemann Weigle (1962–2015, see Artemis Quartet ), who died in July 2015 .
