Carlos Kalmar

Carlos Kalmar (born February 26, 1958 in Montevideo ) is an Austrian - Uruguayan conductor .

Life

Kalmar started playing the violin at the age of six. After his family moved from Uruguay to Austria, at the age of 15 he was accepted at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna , where he learned to conduct with Karl Österreicher . In 1984 he was first in the Hans Swarowsky Competition for Conductors.

Since then he has had numerous engagements in European countries and overseas. He was also chief conductor of the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra from 1987 to 1992, chief conductor and general music director of the Stuttgart Philharmonic from 1991 to 1995, chief conductor and general music director of the Anhalt Philharmonic at the Anhaltisches Theater Dessau from 1996 to 2000, and artistic director and chief conductor of the Lower Austrian Tonkünstlerorchester from 2000 to 2003 . Kalmar has been chief conductor of the Grant Park Music Festival in Chicago since 2000, and its artistic director since 2011. Kalmar has also been Music Director of the Oregon Symphony Orchestra since 2003 .
