István Kertész
István Kertész (born August 28, 1929 in Budapest , † April 16, 1973 in Kfar Saba , Israel ) was a Hungarian conductor in the genres of opera and concert .
Life
Kertész survived the persecution of the Jews by the Eichmann Command and his Hungarian helpers in 1944 . He studied music at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest, where he was taught by Zoltán Kodály , among others . He was influenced by Bruno Walter and Otto Klemperer and became director of the Budapest Opera.
After the Hungarian uprising in 1956 he left Hungary, went to the Federal Republic of Germany and became music director of the Augsburg Opera and in 1964 of the Cologne Opera. In Cologne he conducted the first German performance of Benjamin Britten's Billy Budd .
He was chief conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra from 1965 to 1968, during which time he made guest appearances at the Royal Opera House , Covent Garden . In 1973 he was appointed chief conductor of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra . He drowned shortly afterwards on the Israeli coast during a concert tour. István Kertész was a permanent guest conductor of the Hamburg Symphony Orchestra .
His recordings included the first complete recording of Mozart's Titus and the first complete recording of Antonín Dvořák's symphonies .
István Kertész's grave is in the Melaten cemetery in Cologne (lit. E, between HWG + lit.G).
Kertész was married to the coloratura soprano Edith Gabry (1927–2012).
