Causse Méjean
The Causse Méjean is a limestone plateau in southern France . It is the largest and highest of the Grands Causses in the Massif Central . It is 800 to 1247 m above sea level. M., has an area of 340 km² and is very sparsely populated with around 450 inhabitants (1 inhabitant / km²).
The Causse Méjean is bordered to the north and west by the Tarn Gorge, which is almost 500 meters deep , to the south by the Jonte gorge , which flows into the Tarn at Peyreleau, and to the east by the Tarnon , another tributary of the Tarn (estuary at Florac ). The Causse de Sauveterre joins in the northwest, the Causse Noir in the southwest and the Cevennes mountain range in the south and east . Most of the Causse Méjean belongs to the Cevennes National Park , but the Causses do not belong geographically or geologically to the Cevennes Mountains.
The western half of the Causse Méjean is more forested and located a little lower, the eastern half is only sparsely forested, the highest point is on the Gargo at 1247 m above sea level. M.
In August 2003 there was a major forest fire on the Causse Méjean.
