The leopard skin Hartbovist ( Scleroderma areolatum ) or fielded Potato Bovist is a fungus from the Hartbovist family (Sclerodermataceae). Sometimes it is also referred to as a thin-skinned hard bovist or thin-skinned potato bovist . However, these names are not unique, but are also used for the very similar brown and black Hartbovist ( Scleroderma verrucosum ).
features
Macroscopic features
The leopard skin Hartbovist forms 3–4 (-5) cm wide fruiting bodies. These are rounded, bulbous and usually constricted at the base, so that a kind of stalk is formed. There are root-like mycelial strands on the underside . The outer skin ( peridia ) is quickly torn open into small fields and is yellow-brown to red-brown in color. The meat often changes color when cut. The inside ( gleba ) is quickly tinted gray-black and finely veined pink-white. The smell and taste are unpleasantly pungent metallic.
Microscopic features
The spores are round and have curved spines. They are 9.2-14 micrometers in size, with the spines being 1.4-1.6 micrometers long.
Species delimitation
The brown and black Hartbovist is very similar . It differs from this in that it has larger spores, which are on average well over 10 micrometers in size, in the case of the brown-waxy mainly below. In addition, the stem is more pronounced in the latter.
The thick-skinned potato bovist ( Scleroderma citrinum ) has a thick outer skin and webbed instead of prickly spores.
ecology
The leopard skin Hartbovist is not uncommon and grows individually or in small groups in deciduous and mixed forests . It can often be found in clear places.
meaning
The leopard skin Hartbovist is poisonous. Its consumption leads to vomiting and diarrhea . Fainting fits are possible with larger amounts.
