economy
For centuries, the inhabitants of the community lived mostly as self-sufficient farmers from agriculture, which also included cattle breeding (sheep, goats, cattle, chickens). As a regional economic center, the place was also attractive for small trade, crafts and smaller service companies. In the meantime, tourism plays an important role in the form of renting holiday apartments ( gîtes ).
history
In 1130 monks of the Benedictine abbey of La Chaise-Dieu in Florac built a priory , which formed the core of the further development of the place. In the 13th century there was a castle ( château ), but it was destroyed in the Huguenot Wars . The place itself was surrounded by watercourses and ditches until a city wall ( remparts ) was built in the 14th century . In the 16th and 17th centuries, the city came under Protestant influence, but this came to an end with the repeal of the Edict of Nantes issued by Henry IV in 1598 by Louis XIV (1685) and the subsequent Camisard Wars (1702-1705) .
Effective January 1, 2016, Florac merged with the municipality of La Salle-Prunet to form the Commune nouvelle Florac Trois Rivières .
Attractions
- The parish church of Église Saint-Martin stands on the site of the former priory church, which was destroyed in 1501 due to conflicts with the local landlord ( seigneur ). Instead, a Protestant temple was built, which was renovated in the neoclassical style in 1833. The tension between the classical facade and the bell tower above the apse is interesting .
- The medieval castle was destroyed in the religiously motivated disputes of the 16th century and replaced by the current building in 1652. During the revolutionary years it served as a granary and later as a prison and hospital. The national park administration has been located here since 1976.
- The Capuchin Convent, built in the 16th and 17th centuries, now serves as a private school. The renaissance facade with its embossed stones, the portal and the staircase were recognized as a monument historique in 1999 .
- outside
- About one kilometer south of the village, a medieval bridge ( Pont de Barre ) leads over the Tarnon.
- There are several testimonies from the time of the megalithic culture ( menhirs and dolmens ), including the dolmen de Pierre-plate ( 44 ° 19 ′ 47 ″ N , 3 ° 34 ′ 5 ″ E ) in the municipality .
