Overview map |
The Cevennes National Park ( French : Parc National des Cévennes ) is a national park in the Cevennes in southern France . The management of the park is based in the small town of Florac . The park mainly comprises areas of the Lozère and Gard departments and small parts of the Ardeche and Aveyron departments .
history
As early as 1913, the cave explorer Édouard Alfred Martel proposed the creation of a national park in the Cevennes to protect the sights of the region. In 1956 the idea was taken up again by the Lozère administration . In 1970 the national park was designated. It also includes parts of the so-called ' Stevenson Trail' (GR 70).
Location and geography
In the approx. 3213 km² large national park there are various mountains, such as the Mont Lozère (1699 m), the Mont Aigoual (1567 m) and high plateaus such as the Causse Méjean or the Plateau des Cham des Bondons with numerous testimonies from the Neolithic period ( menhirs and dolmens ), which can also be found in other parts of the national park. The rivers to be mentioned are: Cèze , Chassezac and Gardon , whose waters flow into the Mediterranean , as well as the Lot , Tarn , Jonte and Dourbie , whose waters ultimately end in the Atlantic . The climate is low mountain range and is rarely influenced by the Mediterranean.
Flora and fauna
In the Cevennes there is a species-rich flora and varied fauna. The plants found in the approximately 913 km² core zone include sundew , tulips , lavender , orchids and chestnuts . The Turkish League is also represented in the Cevennes .
Animals such as mouflon , roe deer and deer can be found in the approximately 150,000 hectare forest area that runs through the park. Other animal species are ibex , woodpecker , beaver , genet cats and horseshoe bats .
