The Girl on the Bridge ( La fille sur le pont ) is a French feature film by Patrice Leconte from the year 1999 .
action
Adèle is a young woman who has never been lucky in love. When she wants to jump off a bridge one night, Gabor approaches her. He is a knife thrower by trade and offers her to work as his partner instead of throwing her life away. However, she jumps; Gabor jumps after her and saves her. She now accepts his offer and begins to enjoy life by Gabor's side. They perform together, visit casinos across Europe and are always lucky - even with Gabor's “blind” knife throwing: Adèle is hidden behind a curtain when Gabor throws his knife. Adèle meets a young Greek who has recently married, leaves Gabor and escapes with the young Greek in a lifeboat from a cruise ship on which she was booked with Gabor. Gabor injures his new partner during an appearance and ends up in Istanbul. There he is injured by a truck when he thinks he is seeing Adèle. After his discharge from the hospital, he decides to end his life and wants to jump off a bridge. A young woman speaks to him: it is Adèle who uses the same words as he did months before.
Reviews
"A timeless, formally masterful love story with impressive main characters, but which pays homage too much to the great role models of French melodrama and does not find an independent form and plot."
"In remarkable black-and-white pictures, Patrice Leconte (" The Engagement of Monsieur Hire "," The Hairdresser's Man ") tells the story of two life-weary people who would like to get closer to each other but cannot do it. Despite the imposing premise, many moments are unfortunately drawn out so long that a yawning effect quickly occurs. "
