Daniel Auteuil (2011)

Daniel Auteuil (born January 24, 1950 in Algiers ) is a French theater and film actor, director and screenwriter . He is one of the most important French character actors today.

Life

Auteuil was born in 1950 in Algiers, where his parents, the opera and operetta singers Henri and Yvonne Auteuil, had just made a stop on a tour with the Opera de Paris, and spent the first six months of his life there. Then he grew up in Avignon and gained his first stage experience as an extra as a child. At the age of four he took on his first theater role as the son in Madama Butterfly .

At the age of 16 he appeared with André Benedetto's theater company in Avignon in a supporting role in Anton Chekhov's marriage proposal , which cemented his desire to become an actor. Auteuil first worked as a surveyor in Provence and went to Paris in 1969, where he enrolled in the theater course at the private drama school Cours Florent . He subsequently applied three times to no avail for admission to the Conservatoire national supérieur d'art dramatique , but was still seen in smaller theater roles.

Auteuil made his actual acting debut in 1970 at the Paris Théâtre national de Chaillot in the play Early Morning by Edward Bond . His first major success came in 1972 when he was one of ten French actors among 1,500 competitors who were cast for the American musical Godspell . In Godspell , Auteuil played permanently in Paris for two years. He took his first television role in 1974 in the series Les Fargeot , and made his film debut in 1975 in Gérard Pirès ' Die Entfesselten . Other smaller theater and film roles followed; His greatest theatrical success was Coup de chapeau in 1979 in a production by Pierre Mondy at the Théâtre de la Michodière, for which Auteuil was awarded the Prix Gérard-Philipe as the best theater actor of the year in 1979.

Initially mainly seen in comedies - he played in Claude Zidi's teenage comedy Glückwunsch ... once again in 1980 and in the sequel Glückwunsch II - The louts take the role of Bebel on vacation from the following year - Auteuil made the leap into the character field after just a few years . With the role of the ambivalent farmer Ugolin in Claude Berri's Pagnol film adaptations Jean Florette and Manon's Vengeance , Auteuil achieved a breakthrough as an actor beyond the country's borders. "This legendary figure, born out of French village reality and Pagnolian poetry, changed Daniel Auteuil's life," says prisma.de . Auteuil himself acknowledged in an interview that he by the role "[has] found to [themselves] and realized how important and wonderful it is to be able to do what you really want." For his performance in Jean de Florette was He was awarded a César for Best Actor in 1987 .

Auteuil 2013 as a member of the jury of the Cannes International Film Festival

Auteuil was active as a singer for a short time in 1985, even if he says he has no sense of rhythm. He released the single Que la vie me pardonne (B-side T'es pas la femme du boulanger ) in the spring of 1985 , which in the same year became the theme song of the film The Filou , in which Auteuil played a leading role. The single stayed in the French charts for five weeks and reached number 35. The follow-up single Où elle est (B-side Tu m'as larqué Florence ) failed to make it into the charts in 1985. According to his own statement, Auteuil only devoted himself to music at this time because he had reached a dead end as an actor and was waiting for something to happen (“c'était en attendant qu'il se passe un truc”). The great success of Jean Florette eventually led him to give up music. However, he starred in music videos in later years, such as Maxime Le Forestier's L'homme au bouquet de fleurs (2002) and Pascal Obispos Arigatô (2014).

After Jean Florette and Manon's Vengeance, Auteuil cemented his reputation as a character actor and repeatedly took on roles that addressed emotional disorders, be it psychological problems such as indifference ( A few days with me , 1988) or the inability to love or bond ( Ein Herz im Winter , 1992; My Favorite Season , 1992). As a film actor, Auteuil became internationally known in 1994 for his portrayal of the Protestant King Henry of Navarre in Patrice Chereau's The Night of St. Bartholomew . For his portrayal of the career man Harry in the film On the Eighth Day , who befriends Georges, a resident with Down syndrome, Auteuil was awarded the prize for Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival . He won his second César for Best Actor in 2000 for his role of the unsuccessful knife thrower Gabor in The Woman on the Bridge , who finds a muse and seemingly unreachable lover in the suicide-prone Adèle ( Vanessa Paradis ). The 1999 Lost Son, directed by Chris Menges , became Auteil's first English film, while he returned to comedy as a supposedly homosexual employee in 2001 in A Man Sees Pink . After Jean Florette and Manon's revenge, he was again in front of the camera with Gérard Depardieu.

Auteuil is often seen in the role of the outsider, but serves both the dramatic and the comedic subject. "Tormented, uncomfortable in one's own skin, often shabby and devious: The men who Daniel Auteuil plays are not the typical people who are popular", so the criticism, which also has the "almost autistic trait that Auteuil's screen persona can have", highlights. He is considered a "versatile character actor with a constant change between comedy and drama, between art cinema and mainstream hits", whereby in comedies he "brilliantly succeeds in reversing the crises of meaning that he experiences in his 'serious' films". In 2000, Der Spiegel called him the "man with the most distinctive face in European film."

Auteuil published his first book Il a fait l'idiot à la chapelle in 2004 with illustrations by Sempé . In 2010 he made his debut as a director and realized the film drama La fille du puisatier based on a novel by Marcel Pagnol; in the film he also took on a supporting role. He also filmed the trilogy marsaillaise Pagnols; Marius and Fanny were released in theaters in 2013, César will conclude the trilogy, with Auteuil playing the role of César in all three films. In 2013, under the presidency of Steven Spielberg , Auteuil was a member of the competition jury at the 66th Cannes Film Festival .

In 2008 Auteuil had already been active again in the theater after a long absence from the stage in Molière's School of Women and in 2009 also went on a theater tour with the play. Our Women by Eric Assous, which ran from September 2013 to February 2014 under the direction of Richard Berry , became one of the most successful performances at French private theater in 2013. Auteuil received a Molière nomination for Best Actor in 2014 for his role as medical doctor Paul . In April 2015, the film version of the play, Nos femmes , was released in French cinemas, with Auteuil taking on the role of the medical doctor Paul under the direction of Richard Berry as in the theater. In 2016 Auteuil played the lead role of Daniel in Florian Zeller's play Behind the Facade at the Théâtre de Paris ; Auteuil himself directed and filmed the play in 2018 under the title In Love with My Wife , where he also directed and took on the lead role.

After several comedies that were panned by critics, including Among Friends (2015) and Les naufragés (2016), Auteuil returned to the serious character field with In the Name of My Daughter - The Kalinka Case in 2016. In the film adaptation of the Kalinka criminal case , he took on the role of Kalinka's father, who resorts to vigilante justice. In the following year, the tragic comedy Die brilliant Mademoiselle Neïla came to the cinemas: For its portrayal of the cynical and latently racist law professor Pierre Mazard, Auteuil received his 13th César nomination for Best Actor in 2018; In 2020 he was nominated for a César as Best Actor for the 14th time for his portrayal of the disaffected comic artist Victor in Nicolas Bedos ' tragic comedy The Most Beautiful Time of Our Life .

Private

Auteuil is the father of two daughters, born from his relationships with actress Anne Jousset and actress Emmanuelle Béart . Auteuil was in a relationship with the actress Marianne Denicourt for several years before his first marriage in July 2006 to the Corsican sculptor Aude Ambroggi. Their son was born in September 2009. Auteuil lives in Corsica with his wife and son .

Since an accident in his youth, Auteuil has had a double scar over his upper lip.
