Der Tölpel (original title: Le Paltoquet ) is a French crime film in the style of a chamber play from 1986. The novel On a tué pendant l'Escale by Franz-Rudolf Falk served as a literary model .

action

Four men meet regularly to play cards in a harbor bar: a journalist, a doctor, a professor and a businessman. They are watched by the bar owner, the booby and the beautiful Lotte. This is always seductively lying in a hammock while the booby serves the guests, plays music on an old record player and is able to stop the time using a switch.

One day the card game is interrupted when a detective investigates a murder case. A man's body was found in the attached hotel. The doctor is supposed to determine the cause of death. As it turns out, the man was murdered. One by one, they are now suspected of having committed the murder. Each of those present tries to convince their version of the events. As it turns out, the attractive Lotte always plays a role. The doctor is finally arrested, although it remains to be seen whether he was actually the culprit. The other regulars then leave the restaurant.

background

The film was staged by director Michel Deville in the style of a chamber play, in which the harbor bar acts as the only setting and the dialogues play the central role. The screenplay is an adaptation of Franz-Rudolf Falk's novel On a tué pendant l'Escale , which the title character, played by Michel Piccoli , reads in the film.

The booby premiered on August 13, 1986 in France, where the film was seen by over 560,000 moviegoers. In Germany it was first shown on television by arte on July 12, 1999 .

Reviews

For the lexicon of international film , Der Tölpel was a “criminal chamber play without actual resolution” that was “carried by a group of French star actors”. In spite of the “cool staging”, it is an “erotic film that draws its tension from the polished dialogues”. According to Prisma , the film is a "[m] orbider crime thriller with erotic vibrations", which the director Michel Deville "filmed with a star cast". Cinema described the film as "[s] whimsical chamber play [...] full of puzzles and stars".

Awards

At the César Awards in 1987 , Claude Piéplu was nominated for Best Supporting Actor and Jeanne Moreau for Best Supporting Actress for the César . Piéplu was ultimately defeated by Pierre Arditi in Mélo , while Moreau Emmanuelle Béart had to admit defeat in Manon's revenge .
