The Widow of Saint-Pierre (La veuve de Saint-Pierre) is a 2000 French-Canadian drama.
action
In 1850 , Neel Auguste, sentenced to guillotine for murder, awaits his execution in Saint-Pierre . On the small French island off Newfoundland , however, there is neither a guillotine nor an executioner . The prisoner therefore has to wait in a prison cell for his execution. However, Madame La, the wife of the military commander, takes care of the prisoner. First of all, Auguste tends Madame La's plants in a greenhouse that is located in the courtyard of the prison. After all, he even got clearance. From then on Auguste made himself popular as a companion of Madame La through all kinds of auxiliary work on the island. The image of the cold-hearted, convicted murderer simply does not fit the man who tends flowers and learns to read.
However, the governor and his henchmen keep trying to convince the captain to lock up the convict and more closely follow the law. The captain, military commander of the island, opposes these demands; he cannot refuse his wife a wish. After several months, a guillotine finally arrives by ship on the island of Martinique . A new resident of the island agrees to take over the office of executioner due to financial incentives. Since Auguste made an island resident pregnant and needed money, he hired himself out as a rower to tow the arrived ship together with others to the island harbor. Auguste refuses an opportunity to escape to Newfoundland offered by Madame La.
The captain refuses the governor military protection for the execution that is now possible. After the arrival of a French warship, the captain is removed from office and charged with rioting. He and his wife leave the island with the warship. Auguste is beheaded by the executioner, who soon afterwards disappears from the island under mysterious circumstances. The guillotine that was brought up proves to be too blunt, so that Auguste has to be killed with the ax. The captain is sentenced to death by shooting before a military tribunal and executed. Madame La remains as a widow.
