Saint-Pierre is the capital of the French local authority (collectivité d'outre-mer) Saint-Pierre and Miquelon . With 5406 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017), Saint-Pierre is the more populous of the two municipalities in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon; only 591 people live in Miquelon-Langlade .

geography

The municipality of Saint-Pierre consists of the main island of the same name and a few smaller islands nearby, such as the Île aux Marins , an island that has been uninhabited since the 1960s. Although almost 90% of the inhabitants of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon live in Saint-Pierre, the municipality area is considerably smaller than that of Miquelon-Langlade .

The main town of the municipality is located on the north side of the port "Barachois" on the east coast of the island. The entrance to the port is protected by a small chain of islands.

history

By 1945 there was a third parish in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon , Île aux Marins . However, this was incorporated into Saint-Pierre in 1945. In the 1960s, the population of Île-aux-Marins gave up the settlement, where around 600 people previously lived, and moved to the main island.

Demographics

Saint-Pierre has 5,478 inhabitants, most of whom are of Basque , Breton , Norman or Acadian descent. Nowadays all residents of the parish live on the main island.

traffic

The Saint-Pierre Airport , the international airport of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon, a little south of the main town. The airline Air Saint-Pierre flies to Saint-Pierre from several Canadian airports. There is also a flight connection with Miquelon Airport , the small, insignificant airport on the neighboring island.

The port of the island is called "Barachois" and is located in the south of the main town.
