Juliette Binoche (born March 9, 1964 in Paris ) is a French actress and Oscar winner.

Life

The father Jean-Marie Binoche was a director, actor and sculptor. The mother of Polish origin, Monique Stalens, was an actress and teacher. Her parents passed her artistic interest on to their daughter. Her maternal grandparents had been deported to Auschwitz as Polish intellectuals .

Juliette Binoche played theater as a child. In 1985 she got a small role in Jean-Luc Godard's film Maria and Joseph . Other films in various genres soon followed. She received her first award in 1986 with the Romy Schneider Prize . In 1997 she made her English theater debut at the Almeida Theater in London in the role of Ersilia Dei in Pirandello's play Naked (Vestire gli ignudi). In addition to other European film awards , she received an Oscar in 1997 for her role as Hana in The English Patient (1996) in the Best Supporting Actress category. She was nominated for another Oscar (best female lead) in 2000 for her performance in the film Chocolat - A Small Bite Enough .

In December 2018, Binoche was appointed jury president of the Berlin International Film Festival 2019 .

Juliette Binoche is a hobby painter and lives in Paris. From 1999 to 2003 she was in a relationship with fellow actor Benoît Magimel , who was ten years her junior and whom she met while filming The Love Drama of Venice . She has a daughter with him. A son comes from a previous relationship.
