action

In the near future, it will be normal for people to have synthetic body parts and organs inserted into their bodies in order to improve them. One of the market leaders in this business is the Hanka Robotics group .

Major Mira Killian is the first person whose human brain with its consciousness (the "ghost" ) at Hanka Robotics under the direction of Dr. Ouélet was transplanted into a completely gynoid body (the "shell" ). She has little memories of her life before the transplant and learns from Dr. Ouélet that her parents died in a terrorist attack on their refugee boat, in which their human body was irreparably damaged and only their brain could be saved. After the successful transplant, Cutter, the CEO of the Hanka Group, decides to use Killian in the state special unit, Section 9, in the fight against cyber terrorism .

During a business lunch between Hanka employees and the President of the African Federation, a cyberterrorist attack occurs, to which Killian's team is called by Section 9, but they can no longer prevent the attack. Killian and her team secure a mechanical geisha during the operation, which can be found in the brain of the scientist Dr. Osmond from Hanka Robotics and then killed him. The last message from the geisha before it was destroyed contains the threat that all who cooperate with Hanka Robotics will be destroyed.

Despite the risk that her own brain could also be hacked in the process, Killian hooks directly into the geisha's digital remains to search for answers to the background to the attack. She meets an unknown being named Kuze , who is responsible for the attack on Hanka and the president. The aim of Section 9 is now to find Kuze and eliminate it.

In the course of the investigation it turns out that Kuze was a failed forerunner of Killians in the transplant project Project 2571 , which Hanka actually wanted to let die. Kuze tries to convince Killian to switch to his side, the conversation with him causes Killian to doubt her own identity and she finally introduces Dr. Ouélet to the speech. She admits that artificial memories were implanted in Killian to make her an avid fighter against cyber terrorism. Cutter “got” the people for the experiments in Project 2571 and Ouélet admits that he had not asked any questions about their origins. She goes on to tell Killian that there were 98 forerunners before her for whom Cutter's street children and other people from marginalized groups were kidnapped, as their disappearance would not cause a stir; however, these were all failures that did not survive the transplants.

In the meantime, the Hanka Group or Cutter has decided that Killian is also a failure, which is why she is arrested and taken to the corporate laboratory. Dr. Ouélet is supposed to kill her with a tetrodotoxin injection into the brain, but decides against it and helps Killian escape. Shortly before, Ouélet finally gives Killian an address as a clue to her past. Cutter kills Dr. Ouélet and wants to blame Killian for the murder.

The address turns out to be the apartment of a woman whose daughter died a year ago. In conversation with the woman, Killian realizes that she is her birth mother, that Killian's real name is Motoko Kusanagi , and that Motoko ran away from home about a year ago and joined an underground political movement.

Killian goes to the former meeting point of the underground movement, a temple-like building that repeatedly appears in the visions of Killian and Kuzes. There she finally remembers her arrest and kidnapping and she meets Kuze again, in whom she recognizes her former boyfriend Hideo. Shortly afterwards, the two are attacked by Cutter with a remote-controlled spider-like tank, a so-called T08A2 (R-3000). Kuze is finally shot by a sniper on Cutter's orders, but Killian survives the attack badly damaged and is brought to safety by her teammate and friend Batou. The head of Section 9, Daisuke Aramaki, is also attacked by three Cutters henchmen, but is able to kill them. Aramaki finally goes to Cutter and shoots him with Killian's approval.

The film ends with Killian, whose shell has now been completely restored, visits her own grave with her mother and continues her work on Section 9.

production

In 2008 DreamWorks and Steven Spielberg acquired the rights to produce a live action film based on the manga Ghost in the Shell by Masamune Shirow . Avi Arad and Steven Paul were later confirmed as producers on the project, with Jamie Moss as the scriptwriter. In October 2009 it was announced that Laeta Kalogridis had replaced Moss as a screenwriter. Four and a half years later, in January 2014, a director was found in Rupert Sanders . At this point, William Wheeler had been working on the script for a year and a half. He later said of it, “It was a big undertaking, I was already the second or third writer to work on this script. In total, at least six or seven authors were involved ”.

Margot Robbie was originally slated for the lead role in September 2014 , but Robbie was cast in the role of Harley Quinn in the film Suicide Squad and DreamWorks offered Scarlett Johansson the lead role, which she eventually got. In November 2015, Pilou Asbæk was hired to play Batou, a close friend of Killian's and the best fighter in Section 9. Also that month it was reported that Sam Riley was in discussion for the role of Kuze, the film's antagonist , however, this role was eventually filled with Michael Pitt . In March 2016, Japanese actor "Beat" Takeshi Kitano was selected for the role of Daisuke Aramaki, the founder and leader of Section 9. In April 2016, the entire cast was announced, including Juliette Binoche , Chin Han and Lasarus Ratuere .

Filming for Ghost in the Shell began in Wellington , New Zealand on February 1, 2016 and ended on June 3, 2016. In addition, the shooting took place for a few days in June in the Jordan area in the Yau Tsim Mong district of the Chinese special administrative region Hong Kong .

Angelica Jade Bastien of RogerEbert.com devotes a detailed analysis of the film and goes into detail on both the Japanese manga from 1989, the anime film adaptation from 1995 and the shortcomings of the script and the performances of the actors. She finally comes to the conclusion that Ghost in the Shell is beautiful, even breathtaking. But the visual pleasure could not hide the empty content: "There has never been a film with such an obsession with the human soul that at the same time testifies to soullessness".

Frank-Michael Helmke from Filmszene.de criticizes the "lack of imagination of the narrative [of the] conventional crime thriller plot [s]", whereby the film "ultimately does not really convince on any level" and "the narrative fascinating aspects of the original" absence. Helmke impresses Ghost in the Shell only superficially, there "[the film] pays homage to [...] the aesthetics of its original with astonishing homage".

For Guy Lodge from the industry journal Variety , Ghost in the Shell offers “clever, tough entertainment”, which “thanks to the lively narrative story and visual presentation almost surpasses the original films - even if part of their eerie, melancholy mood does not fit into the new one flawless shell was transferred ”.

Dan Jolin of the film magazine Empire judges that although the film is " solid and pretty" to watch thanks to the retro appeal of cyberpunk [...], it is "too busy with its shell, which means that it was forgotten to bring in enough spirit".

Gross profit

The pure production costs of just under 110 million US dollars are offset by worldwide revenues of 169 million US dollars. The largest markets were the US and Canada (40 million), China (29 million) and Japan (9 million). The leading studios Paramount and Dreamworks invested between 200 and 250 million US dollars in the production and marketing of the film, which means that this result means a loss of up to 80 million US dollars, which is why the film is considered a financial flop .

In Germany, the film grossed almost 6.7 million US dollars and attracted around half a million visitors to the cinemas. In Austria and Switzerland, Ghost in the Shell grossed less than a million US dollars each.
