After Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice , Suicide Squad is the third film in the DC Extended Universe . The film started in the United States on August 5, 2016, in Germany it was released on August 18, 2016.

action

Amanda Waller puts together a team for the US government , which is to be used in high-risk assignments regardless of loss and therefore consists of dangerous criminals: the disturbed Harley Quinn , the professional killer Deadshot , the pyrokinetic ex-gangster El Diablo , the thief captain Boomerang , the cannibal killer Croc and the mercenary Slipknot . All are recruited from Belle Reve Prison, placed under the command of Colonel Rick Flag, and fitted with an explosive nano-implant that can kill them if they disobey.

Flag's friend, the archaeologist Dr. June Moone is possessed by a witch goddess, the Enchantress . With a horde of monsters she creates a weapon and calls on her brother Incubus for help. Waller sends her team, the Suicide Squad , on the assumption that it is a terrorist attack on Midway City .

They join Katana , who wields a mystical samurai sword and Flag serves as a bodyguard . While Slipknot is killed by the bomb implant while trying to escape, Harley succeeds in having hers neutralized, and she escapes in a helicopter captured by Joker . However, this is shot down on the spot, and while Harley can still save himself, Joker appears to have died in the crash.

The enchantress's assistants manage to kidnap Waller. Thereupon Flag releases the team from their assignment. However, it still follows him and tracks down the Enchantress and Waller in a flooded subway station. In the final battle, El Diablo sacrifices himself to hold Incubus over a bomb.

In the fight against the Enchantress, however, the Suicide Squad is defeated. When she asks her to submit to her, Harley approaches her, but only to cut out her heart. Killer Croc throws explosives into the world-destroying weapon of the Enchantress and Deadshot implosions it with one shot. Flag grabs the severed heart of the Enchantress, crushes it, and frees June. After they have successfully carried out their mission, the squad members receive reduced sentences and other privileges. Back in Belle Reve Prison, Harley is freed by Joker, who survived the helicopter crash.

In a mid-credit scene, Bruce Wayne aka Batman can be seen talking to Amanda Waller about the formation of the Justice League and threatening to take over Waller's duties in the future.

production

background

The first plans for a real film version of the antihero team Suicide Squad go back to February 2009. At that time it was planned that Dan Lin and Stephen Gilchrist would act as producers and co-producers, while Justin Marks would write the script. However, the film was never made with this staff . In September 2014, Warner Bros. announced a film about the Suicide Squad that would be directed by David Ayer and would be released in 2016. Ayer was also supposed to write the script. On October 15, 2014, Warner Bros. confirmed this information once again as part of the announcement of a whole series of films for the film universe started with Man of Steel based on the DC Comics . In 2014, the cartoon Batman: Assault on Arkham, the first cinematic representation of the Suicide Squad, was released, although this is not set in the DC cinema universe , but in the Arkham universe . In addition, the Suicide Squad was already seen in the television series Arrow and Justice League Unlimited , which are also located in two other parallel universes , in audiovisual media .

occupation

In October 2014, Will Smith , Tom Hardy , Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling were each offered a role for the film. However, Gosling turned down the role as Joker because he did not want to sign a contract for multiple films. Instead, Jared Leto came up for the role. In late 2014, Warner Bros. confirmed the roles of Smith as Deadshot , Hardy as Rick Flag , Robbie as Harley Quinn , Leto as Joker, and Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerange and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress .

Hardy, who had played a villain from the DC universe with Bane in The Dark Knight Rises in 2012 , declined his role as Rick Flag afterwards for reasons of time, as the shooting of The Revenant was delayed. In his place, Joel Kinnaman came up for the role and was eventually hired. Jake Gyllenhaal was previously offered the role, but he waived. In addition, were Viola Davis , Octavia Spencer and Oprah Winfrey for the role of Amanda Waller in conversation. Ultimately, Davis was cast to portray the character who had previously shown apparent interest in the role. On March 31, 2015, it was announced that Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje will play the role of Killer Croc and play Karen Fukuhara Katana .

In the same month it was announced that boxer Raymond Olubawale and Scott Eastwood would star in Suicide Squad . The following month it became public that Adam Beach , Ike Barinholtz and Jim Parrack had also signed for a role in Suicide Squad . In May 2015, already during the filming, a double Ben Afflecks was seen dressed as Batman on the set.

Filming on May 28, 2015 in Toronto

Filming was scheduled to begin in and around Toronto , Ontario in mid-April . On December 1, 2014, it was announced that preproduction would begin two months before the main shoot and that Pinewood Toronto Studios had been booked for the work. The aim was to end the work in September. Filming finally began on April 15th in Toronto. The work could be divided in advance so that August 30, 2015 was the target for the end of the shooting. In addition to the studio recordings was in Hy's Steak House and in the Adelaide Street and at the Ching Lane added scene snowstorm-one. On May 5th, some lavishly staged scenes were filmed in downtown Toronto, near Yonge and Dundas Square . Five days later, a stunt double of Ben Affleck was filmed in the streets of Toronto while he was chasing the Joker and Harley Quinn in the Batmobile .

During the filming, Ayer hired a psychotherapist for the set because he was concerned that the actors might exceed their personal limits. In early August, non-actor filming took place in the city of Chicago . The shooting ended at the end of August 2015 before the desired date.

At the beginning of 2016 there were re- shoots . The work is said to have taken place in Los Angeles for three weeks in April 2016.

reception

Age rating

In the US, Suicide Squad was rated PG-13 by the MPAA for violent scenes, overall action, lewd content and language, and for character behavior that can be disturbing. In Germany, where the film is rated at FSK 16, the release certificate says: “The visually stunning film contains numerous action and fight scenes, which often involve killings. Young people from the age of 16 are able to place these acts of violence in the context of the unrealistic comic story. A negative role model effect is therefore not to be feared. ”In the justification of the Austrian Youth Media Commission (JMK), which has decided in favor of a release from the age of 12, it says:“ The action-packed film shows every form of violence, but is clearly recognizable as fiction. [...] The many killings were received very critically by the Commission, but the film is far from reality. Despite the brutality and glorification of weapons, which should be rejected, there is no danger of imitation. 12-year-olds can distinguish quite precisely between real and fictional action. "

Reviews

The film was only able to convince 26 percent of the Rotten Tomatoes critics (out of a total of 284 critics as of August 18, 2016).

Andreas Borcholte from Spiegel Online asks himself how so many weird characters can be so terribly bored and describes the film as a suicide mission without a joke . Ayer, who is actually a specialist in morally highly ambivalent figures and team dynamics, so Borcholte, seems to have been hopelessly overwhelmed by the abundance of figures to be established. If you had focused on Deadshot and Quinn in the film, so Borcholte, maybe something could still be saved.

Reto Baer from Radio SRF 3 describes Suicide Squad as a tame and dull film that disappoints across the board. Joker is not part of the suicide squad, which Baer expected, and therefore only appears marginally. In addition, Jared Leto plays it shrill, but not at all scary. One reason why the film turned out to be so toothless is possibly that David Ayer had to make a film that children in the USA are also allowed to see and instead of being crazy, cheeky, anarchistic and new, it is tense, humorous and has become surprising. Overall, many moviegoers and film critics were disappointed that photos of Leto were published in advance, showing him in the role of Joker and reminiscent of Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight , but the character hardly plays a role in the film and only appears in a few scenes see is. Some critics even considered it a fraud to advertise the actor, known as the Method Actor, in this form and initially sell him as the secret star of the story in the first trailers for the film.

Gross profit

Despite bad reviews, the film grossed over $ 130 million in the first weekend after its release in the US. Total earnings in the United States are over $ 325 million, making Suicide Squad the eighth most successful film of the year there (as of November 20, 2016). In Germany, the film has had over 1.6 million cinema-goers so far, making it 17th among the most visited films of the year (as of August 13, 2017). The film's estimated budget of $ 175 million is offset by global revenues of over $ 745 million. This places the film in 8th place among the world's most successful films of 2016 .

The second part Justice League 2 was initially announced for June 14, 2019 - again under the direction of Zack Snyder - but the sequel was later postponed indefinitely.

The sequel to Suicide Squad itself was announced in March 2016, even before it actually hit theaters. In February 2017, the studio released a shortlist of potential directors, including Mel Gibson , Jonathan Levine , Ruben Fleischer and Daniel Espinosa . In March, Adam Cozad was hired to write the script. Due to delays in developing the script, Gibson dropped out of the project, while Jaume Collet-Serra was named preferred director in July . Zak Penn meanwhile wrote a treatment and noticed that a new script was being worked out. Collet-Serra later left as a director. That same month, July 2017, the film title was officially announced at San Diego Comic-Con as Suicide Squad 2 . In addition, it has been confirmed that Leto will return in his role as the Joker. In September 2017, Gavin O'Connor was officially introduced as the scriptwriter and director . Production should start in mid-2018.
