Joel Kinnaman (* 25. November 1979 in Stockholm as Charles Joel Nordström ) is a Swedish - American actor .

Life

Joel Kinnaman is the son of a Swedish psychotherapist and an American deserter from the Vietnam War . He lived in Laos for five years before he came to Sweden and became a craftsman. During a period of lack of acting engagement, Joel Kinnaman spent four months touring some of the places "his father once spoke of".

Kinnaman has five sisters, one of whom is the Swedish actress Melinda Kinnaman . According to his own statement, he is of Jewish descent.

While still at high school, he met today's Swedish actor Gustaf Skarsgård , who persuaded him to give theater a try. He has also enjoyed a long friendship with the director of the film Snabba Cash , Daniél Espinosa . Kinnaman was supposed to be part of Espinosa's debut film Babylonsjukan , which was not made possible by the drama school.

Joel Kinnaman is a Swedish and US citizen and currently resides in Los Angeles .

Career

From 2004 to 2007 he attended the theater school in Malmö , where he learned his trade under guest lecturers such as Staffan Göthe and Ann Petrén .

Parallel to his film roles, he devoted himself to the theater. He has already received critical acclaim for his portrayals in In A Dark And Northern Place , directed by Mattias Andersson. The real breakthrough came later with the play Schuld und Atonement , also directed by Andersson. Because of his portrayal of Raskolnikow , he received his first theater awards, including the Såstaholms pris till Höstsols minne.

The first Swedish film successes

Although he already had a certain national success through films such as Hannah med H , Storm and Tjenare kungen - all of which were successful films that were highly regarded by critics - it was only with Arn - Riket vid vägens slut that he managed to attract international attention. His role as Sverker Karlsson ensured that he was eligible for the role of Frank Wagner in the Johan Falk film series, known in Germany as GSI - Spezialeinheit Göteborg . The part is based on the former Swedish police officer Peter Rätz , who infiltrated the Hells Angels and Bandidos for several years and now lives in a witness protection program abroad. Kinnaman visited him for four days and learned his behavior to use later in the film. He made this so convincing that in 2010 he received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the Guldbagge Swedish Film Award . The financial success of the film series was also impressive - in addition to 400,000 DVDs sold , the films were watched by an audience of millions on television on TV4 . As for the success, Kinnaman only said that his accountant got a shock because of his account balance, because unfortunately he did not have any income-sharing in the works.

His next film Easy Money was also a national and international success. In addition to critical acclaim, the film received numerous nominations and awards, including a Guldbagge for Best Actor for Kinnaman in 2011 . He had already read the script for the shooting of the GSI films and agreed because of his own parallels to his criminal youth and past. There were just three days between the two shoots and Kinnaman, who was born in Stockholm, returned to his old home after six years in Malmö and Gothenburg for the shoot.

The step to Hollywood

Because of these successes, Kinnaman was considered for the roles of Marvel hero Thor for the film of the same name and Max Rockatansky for the fourth part of the Mad Max series. But he didn't get both roles. He was considered for the role of Thor because "you want someone with a Scandinavian touch," but he was unable to screen test with Natalie Portman as he was involved in the making of Snabba Cash . Things looked more promising for the role of Max Rockatansky, according to Kinnaman's statement. He was "close to getting the lead role for Mad Max 4 ". The decision was between him "and two others, and Tom Hardy got the role ".

Shelly Brown, Kinnaman's agent and also agent of Rachel McAdams , Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp , announced in spring 2010 that his protégé would be filming Darkest Hour in Moscow under the direction of Chris Gorak and the film produced by Timur Bekmambetov . This is possible because the pilot for the AMC series The Killing , the American interpretation of the Danish crime series Kommissarin Lund - Das Verbrechen (Forbrydelsen) , in which Kinnaman is involved, has been completed. In this he plays one of the leading roles as Stephen Holder . Brown himself has specialized, among other things, in representing internationally known Swedish film actors in Hollywood, including Kinnaman, Michael Nyqvist and Noomi Rapace . Despite focusing on a possible Hollywood career, two sequels of Snabba Cash with Kinnaman are planned.

In 2014, Kinnaman took on the lead role in the science fiction film RoboCop , a remake of the 1980s film of the same name.
