action

The two young entrepreneurs Sean and Ben fly to Moscow together to present their business idea to new customers. However, they are disappointed when they arrive late at the meeting, as their manager Skyler has already sold the idea as his and Sean and Ben have been fired. In the evening they try to overcome their frustration in a club where they get to know the two girls Natalie and Anne and also see Skyler again.

While the four of them are deep in conversation, the power goes out and everyone runs outside, where strange orange balls sink from the sky. One of these balls comes in the direction of the party guests who gather around it. A policeman carefully approaches the glowing ball and touches it lightly with his baton, whereupon it is jerked into the air and turns into dust. Everyone runs back in immediately, but the bullets chase them and many are "pulverized". Sean, Ben, Natalie and Anne, as well as Skyler, can escape into the bar's kitchen and hide there.

After four days they decide to investigate the situation outside. Everything is as if swept empty and partially destroyed, there is no trace of the eerie light balls to be seen. The five discover that the alien beings induce electricity , which makes them visible, especially at night, by flickering lamps. Protection against perception by them exists behind glass and in a Faraday cage .

The friends take refuge in the US embassy and learn of a worldwide alien attack. Skyler leaves the building and wants to fight the attackers. Sean, Ben, Natalie and Anne stay in the embassy and are initially at a loss as to how to behave. In a bird cage, which serves as a Faraday cage, you discover a functioning radio device in which an announcement can be heard continuously in Russian . They realize that they are not the only survivors and decide to go in search of other people that evening. Just as they are about to leave the building, they see Skyler running through the streets with an assault rifle. Flickering lights of the parked vehicles indicate that the alien beings are following him. The four friends try to make Skyler aware of the impending danger, but he dies in a brief firefight. This makes it clear that even ordinary handguns can hardly do anything against the intruders. The four are about to return to the building when they discover an illuminated apartment in another high-rise. You run there and meet Vika and Sergei. He has turned his apartment into a large Faraday cage and produces electricity with the help of a power generator . He also constructed a weapon that emits a microwave beam that weakens the creatures.

While searching for food together, Vika, Natalie and Anne are discovered and pursued by the creatures. They manage to return to Sergei's apartment at the last minute, but they can no longer close the cage there. The creatures invade, kill Sergei and Anne, while Sean, Ben, Natalie and Vika escape. On their subsequent escape, they meet other survivors who want to defend their city under the leadership of Matvei. You hear the radio transmission, which indicates a submarine that is lying in the Moskva and wants to pick up survivors. Matvei wants to stay in Moscow to fight the creatures together with his friends, but agrees to accompany the four to the submarine. The survivors now also recognize why the beings came to earth: They exploit the raw materials of the planet. With the help of Matvei and his group, they can weaken some creatures with the microwave weapon and kill them with conventional firearms. However, Ben is killed on the run by the creatures and Natalie is separated from the group. Sean does not want to leave Natalie behind, however, and with the help of the other survivors sets out to find her. He finds them at a bus station, but the group is attacked again by the creatures. In a fight, Sean is able to save Natalie from the creatures at the last minute and get on the submarine with her.

The film ends with them receiving a radio message from other resistance fighters and setting off with the submarine.

criticism

"A science fiction film designed as a virtual thunderstorm with effects, which lacks both interesting characters and an exciting plot and which does not succeed in thrilling action scenes."

“Unfortunately, Chris Gorak's The Darkest Hour is not a parody , it is meant completely seriously, even if it is difficult to believe. […] None of the characters was expected to be ambiguous or human […] As if that weren't annoying enough, the protagonists of the film are so stupid in all their endeavors that the viewer soon asks seriously why these idiots attacked the Aliens have survived.
