Max Giorgio Choa Minghella (born September 16, 1985 in London ) is a British actor , film director and screenwriter . He became known through the films Syriana and The Social Network as well as through the television series The Handmaid's Tale - The Maid's Report .

life and work

Minghella was born in 1985 in Hampstead, London . He comes from a close cooperation with theater , film and television -knit family: His father is the director and Oscar award winner Anthony Minghella , his mother is from Hong Kong coming choreographer and actress Carolyn Choa. His sister Hannah Minghella is a film producer and head of production at Sony Pictures Animation . His aunt Edana Minghella and his uncle Benidict Minghella work as screenwriters for television, including Doc Martin and Doctor Martin .

Minghella grew up in London and came into contact with the stage and film there at an early age: his father often took him with him to theater productions and filming . As a teenager, his father gave him small extras in his films, including in On the Road to Cold Mountain . After finishing school he became a member of the National Youth Theater in London and attended the acting class there. He came to Hollywood through an agent . He took his first major film role in 2005 in the American film Bee Season as the son of Richard Gere and Juliette Binoche ; the film was shown at the 2005 Toronto International Film Festival . In the same year he played George Clooney's son Robby in the internationally successful and Oscar-nominated film Syriana . From then on, Minghella was primarily seen in US productions. His breakthrough as an actor in 2006 with the lead role of Jerome in the American art university milieu playing satirical comedy Art School Confidential alongside John Malkovich . After a handful of less successful films, he was able to record his greatest international success to date in 2009 with the male lead in Agora - The Pillars of Heaven : In the Spanish film , financed with Hollywood production funds and, among other film prizes, which has won several Goyas , Minghella plays the slave Davus alongside Rachel Weisz as Hypatia of Alexandria. The direction was taken over by Hossein Amini . In 2018 Minghella's directorial debut, Teen Spirit , for which he also wrote the screenplay, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival with Elle Fanning in the lead role .

Trivia

In an interview, Minghella referred to Matt Damon as his professional role model, whom he made friends with at the age of 13 on the set of his father's film The Talented Mr. Ripley . Damon, according to Minghella, is someone from whom he has learned a lot: "He tries to lead a normal life."
