Art School Confidential (dt. About Confidential art schools report ) is a feature film by American director Terry Zwigoff from 2006. The film is based on the eponymous comic book by Daniel Clowes .

action

The shy Jerome, who was formerly regularly harassed at school by classmates to study at the prestigious begins Academy Strathmore Institute in New York City. He shares his dorm room with Matthew and Vince, the latter is currently working on a film project about a series of murders in the vicinity of the campus . The "eternal student" Bardo gives Jerome some tips on how to get to know girls most effectively here, but the actual implementation is not to Jerome's satisfaction. He only finds Audrey, who works as a nude model in Jerome's class, of interest.

Jerome, who has made it into his head to become a recognized artist, is becoming increasingly frustrated as the work of his classmate, the "handsome" Jonah, is rated more positively than his own by both the professor and the other students, even though Jonahs Works like simple industrial graphics look. In addition, Audrey, with whom Jerome fell in love, begins to be interested in Jonah.

One day, Bardo takes Jerome to see Jimmy, a Strathmore graduate who lives in a shabby apartment in a shabby neighborhood. Jimmy, addicted to alcohol, explains to Jerome the darker side of the art business and that you can only achieve something with patting and relationships.

As the date for the evaluation of the term papers approaches, Jerome tries to get advice from Professor Sandiford, who for his part is not exactly successful with his triangular pictures. To get a "foot in the door" of a gallery, Jerome works as a waiter there, where he also happens to meet Jonah and Audrey, which apparently completely diminishes his hopes for a relationship with Audrey.

The drunk and disaffected Jerome visits Jimmy, who gives him one of his pictures of a victim of the campus serial killer . The image and Jimmy's behavior towards Jerome suggest that Jimmy himself is the Strathmore Strangler. One night when Jerome notices that Jonah is taking a picture of Jimmy's picture, he visits Jimmy again and gets the rest of the pictures of the serial killer victims, which he ties together with a piece of cable from Jimmy's apartment. As he leaves the apartment, a cigarette carelessly left by Jerome falls to the floor.

Jerome decides to submit Jimmy's pictures for semester assessment after destroying most of his own. When this work is rated badly again - and Jonah's good - he makes his way to Jimmy. His apartment is burned out, however, and Jerome learns from a passerby that the fire was caused by a cigarette and that all the occupants are dead. Jonah turns out to be an undercover agent who tried to track down the serial killer. Jerome is arrested as a potential murderer on the basis of the victims' pictures, which Jerome has passed off as his own, and the cable with which the victims were apparently strangled.

At the end of the film, Jerome is in jail and is now a highly sought-after artist. Although he would presumably be released or his trial could be accelerated based on the evidence, he prefers to stay in prison, as this could only improve his cult status. In the meantime he has also met Audrey, whom he kisses through the partition in the prison's visitor room in the final scene.

criticism

"A good-humored and top-class satire on the art and culture industry, which takes their sensitivities into their arms with empathy."
